Family Holidays to the Dominican Republic

Thanks to the romantic hotspots of St Lucia and Aruba, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Caribbean is reserved for honeymooners and couples. But, when it comes to family holidays, the Dominican Republic is right on the money. Its diverse landscape offers plenty of opportunities for fun days out and adventures. You can take a 4x4 safari to explore the jungle-clad mountains, try adrenaline-filled water sports on the beach, and wander the colourful streets of the island’s capital, Santo Domingo. Or you could simply spend all your time playing on the powder-soft sands and paddling in the sea. Kids of all ages, from tots to teenagers, will love the Dominican Republic.

Why is the Dominican Republic great for families?

As one of the biggest islands in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is a brilliant choice for families. You can expect child-friendly beaches, a variety of attractions and excellent family resorts. There are three main regions that are best for Dominican Republic holidays. Punta Cana has classic Caribbean good looks, with turquoise waters and sugary beaches, plus tropical mangroves. The coastal areas of Puerto Plata are popular for water sports, while Puerto Plata city itself has a rum distillery and a sky-high cable car. And finally, there’s Samana Peninsula. This north-east slice of paradise has a desert-island feel, with unspoilt beaches, picturesque waterfalls and migrating humpback whales. Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll find delicious restaurants, welcoming people and skin-warming sunshine. The best weather is between December and March, and July to August – perfect timing for a family holiday.

Things to do in the Dominican Republic

Discover the Best Beaches

The Dominican Republic has so many great beaches that it can be hard to know where to start. If you’re travelling with toddlers, head to Bavaro Beach – the shallow waters and gently-sloping sands were made for paddling. Playa Boca Chica is another great choice for families with young children, as the beach’s coral reef acts as a barrier, keeping the water calm and still. There’s a selection of bars and cafes too, if you want a break from the sun. Playa Dorada, meanwhile, is great for families travelling with teenagers. Here, there are plenty of water sports – such as water-skiing and windsurfing – for both kids and adults. If you’re a family of surfers, head to Macao Beach. This pristine beach has the UNESCO stamp of approval, along with brilliant waves and a surf school.

Explore the Island

If you can drag yourself away from the picture-perfect beaches, you might be surprised by just how many family-friendly activities the Dominican Republic has to offer. You can take a tour of the island to see the wild jungles, coconut oil farms and cocoa plantations. If your kids love wildlife, consider booking a kayaking trip through the tangled mangroves of the Gri Gri lagoons, where you’ll be able to see all kinds of exotic birds, including parrots and toucans. Or why not head out to sea for snorkelling and whale-watching? For something a little speedier, head to Fun City Action Park. Just outside Puerto Plata, this is the biggest go-karting centre in the whole of the Caribbean, with three different race tracks, bumper cars and a playground.

Eat Delicious Dominican Food

Dominican cuisine is full of flavour, thanks to its African and Spanish influences. Favourite ingredients include chicken, beans and rice – but plantain is the staple you’ll see everywhere. Mangu is a very popular dish served at breakfast time. What better way to start your day than by tucking into mashed plantain, served with eggs, salami and cheese? Other treats you’ll see on plenty of menus is a rich stew – Sancocho – and twice-fried plantain, known as Tostones. And no holiday to the Dominican Republic would be complete without ordering La Bandera Dominica. Representing the colours of the flag, this patriotic meal consists of braised chicken, stewed red beans, rice and salad. Parents should also try a glass of Mamajuana – a native port-like drink made with rum, red wine and honey.
