The island of Penang was established in 1786 as a trading outpost and has developed a fascinating cultural history that has made it a melting pot of influences from across the world. An incredible location, it is the perfect place for enjoying a crisp beach, azure blue waters and colonial architecture.
Despite being a small area, this island became a bustling port and is now home to a dynamic UNESCO World Heritage capital city of George Town, stunning beaches in Batu Ferringhi and wonderful wildlife in what is the smallest national park in the world.
Filled with character and charm, the South East Asian territory of Penang isn’t quite as illustrious as some of her neighbours but has the ability to offer you a far more unique and unforgettable experience than many destinations across the world.

Penang is often added as part of a large trip across South East Asia. Visiting this small island, we recommend you pack light because it is quite relaxed and incredibly hot and humid every day.
One of the main attractions here are the beautiful beaches so be sure to carry swimwear. Also carry trainers or walking shoes if you are going to head up Penang Hill or to the National Park. Shorts, t-shirts, sandals and a sun hat are perfect for a day in the city, and even into the evening Penang is a lot more casual that some of its bigger neighbours. Keep in mind that mosquitos are common here so be sure to pack mosquito and insect repellent – along with some cream to apply should you find yourself with a bite. Long cotton trousers and long sleeve shirts are also advised to keep you covered up in the evening.
As it is an Islamic country, try to be modest with how you dress to respect the locals, and make for your own comfort during your sightseeing trips. As a general guide, take clothing that covers the shoulders, knees and ankles. As always, be sure to carry plenty of sun block, and the majority of medical supplies can be purchased here.
Malaysia has a tropical climate and Penang enjoys the same. With a daily average high over 30ºC throughout the year, and a mean in the late twenties, you can expect a hot holiday whenever you travel. High heat, high humidity and high rainfall is always to be expected and while there is a wet and dry season, you can expect some precipitation whenever you travel; the driest period is between December and February. While Penang is short in length, it is hilly in places, which gives it some minor regional variation.
The phenomenon of “the haze” is something that this area is very prone to and the sun can hide behind grey sky after ash particles are carried over in the wind following forest fires in Sumatra, Indonesia.
