Once reserved only for the most intrepid travellers, Cambodia is no longer a hidden gem. It’s become a popular choice for culture-seekers and history lovers in recent years, as backpackers and tour groups alike are lured by its unique appeal. Although Cambodia’s visitor numbers are dwarfed by some of its neighbours, this smaller nation has just as much to offer as the likes of Thailand and Vietnam. And, since more people have been drawn to its lush landscapes and intricate temples, the country’s infrastructure has much improved – making Cambodia holidays easier than ever before.
On a trip to Cambodia, you can discover impressive landmarks, bustling cities and tranquil countryside. You’ll probably start off in the capital, Phnom Penh, which serves as a great introduction to the country’s culture. You can browse the stalls in the Art Deco Central Market, try delicious street food, and sail down the Mekong River, admiring the Royal Palace and the National Museum as you go.
But, for all its charm, Phnom Penh is haunted by Cambodia’s harrowing past. Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia and oversaw the annihilation of a fifth of the population. To learn more about this dark chapter, you can visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, which serves as a monument to those who died. Equally, the Killing Fields in nearby Choeung Ek are a moving must-see during any holiday to Cambodia.
Further north, meanwhile, Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s biggest attraction. A relic of the Khmer Empire, this series of striking temples features more than 1,000 buildings and is around 900 years old. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, but it shot to fame in 2001 when it featured in hit blockbuster Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Spend a day admiring its grand towers, finely-carved doorways and vine-covered walls. Or, if you want to see Angkor Wat at its best, wake up early and arrive in time for sunrise.
Cambodia holidays are ideal for those interested in cultural sites – but why stop there? You could continue your trip with a stay in lesser-known Laos, or learn about Vietnam’s fascinating history when you explore Ho Chi Minh City. Alternatively, if you fancy some beach time, hop over to one of Thailand’s pretty islands. Whatever you’re in to, our Travel Specialists will help you plan your tailor-made getaway.
