The award-winning TranzAlpine train runs daily from coast to coast - from Christchurch to Greymouth. It is rated as one of the top six scenic train journeys in the world. After crossing the patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, the TranzAlpine winds its way over massive viaducts, through river gorges and into the ice-fed Waimakariri River Valley. It tracks its way up and across the spectacular Southern Alps via the alpine village of Arthur's Pass, situated at 737 metres above sea level, before descending through lush beech forests to Greymouth on the rugged West Coast.

Coastal Pacific

The South Island's Coastal Pacific service provides a daily link between Christchurch and the picturesque port of Picton, where it connects with the Interislander Ferry. The route crosses through the Marlborough wine country and over plains, heading south down the east coast. For over 100 kilometres it runs along a thin ledge of land pinned between the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Break your journey in Kaikoura to experience unique whale watching cruises, before the route passes the rural farmlands of North Canterbury and arrives into Christchurch.

Northern Explorer

Journey through the heart of the North Island, between Auckland and Wellington. Along the way travel through the central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, and past the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world-famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges. All carriages have panoramic windows from which to enjoy the views and the glass-backed Observation Car offers lounge-style seating for a unique and scenic rail experience.

Interislander Ferry


Up to five daily sailings in each direction between Wellington on the North Island and Picton on the South Island.

The Cook Strait separates New Zealand's North and South Islands, and is crossed up to five times daily in each direction by the Interislander Ferry, which sails between Wellington and Picton. The 92km, three-hour journey is considered one of the most beautiful and scenic ferry crossings in the world, and takes you through the convoluted waterways of the dramatic Marlborough Sounds. The Interislander offers a comfortable way to travel between the two islands, and there's a comprehensive range of on-board facilities including bars, cafés, shops, a children's play area and cinema.
