Australia Rail Travel

Australia Rail Travel

Australia is home to some of the world's greatest train journeys, and a trip across this vast continent allows the traveller to recapture the golden age of rail travel. Rail passes are ideal for tailor-making an itinerary to suit your own arrangements. Coach passes make travel easy by offering a choice based on either the distance or the amount of days you wish to travel.

The Overland

The Overland journeys between Adelaide and Melbourne during daylight hours, operating both ways twice a week. Travel past diverse landscapes, from rugged scrubland, to vast open plains and through gently rolling hills. The route was inspired by the 'Overlanders' who made this journey by horseback until 1887, when the train line was first pioneered. On board choose between Red Service, offering comfortable recliner seats or Red Premium Service with only 36 seats per carriage offering plenty of leg room and wider aisles allowing an at-seat food & drink service (for purchase). Complimentary orange juice is provided on departure in the Red Premium Service while all guests can access the sociable 828 Café. The Overland links up with both The Ghan and the Indian Pacific in Adelaide.

The Ghan

The Legendary Ghan tracks the historic route of the Afghan camel trains, covering 2,979kms between Darwin and Adelaide via Alice Springs and contrasting the tropical Top End with Outback.

The Journey
Departing up to twice-weekly during peak season between Darwin and Adelaide, The Ghan travels for two nights and three days through the heart of Australia. From Darwin in the tropical Top End wend your way through the lush countryside to Katherine, gateway to the Katherine Gorge. The following day wake to the Outback sunrise as you travel through the Red Centre to Alice Springs, where many guests choose to break their journey, and on past the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide. Meals are also included for Gold and Platinum guests.

Off-Train Excursions
At Katherine, three touring options are available to explore the stunning Katherine Gorge including a boat cruise and a cultural experience at the Gorge. As the train approaches Alice Springs, you'll have the chance to enjoy further excursions such as a visit to the Desert Park, or a sightseeing tour of the town taking in the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base. Off Train Excursions are included in the fare for Gold & Platinum Service guests, and are an additional cost for Red Service travellers.
