Discover the beauty, spirituality and modernity of Japan on this independent nine-day adventure, as you explore Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Travel from city to city by Bullet Train and enjoy the unique experiences each place has to offer.
First up, you’ll explore Japan’s ever-evolving capital – Tokyo. Delve into the past at the Senso-ji temple or Imperial Palace, and keep things modern by eating at top-class sushi joints and singing away at karaoke bars. For a totally different perspective, ascend the Skytree for sweeping views over the sprawling city.
Next, you’ll continue west to chilled-out Kyoto and its many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Learn about the city’s history and traditions as you visit some of its 2,000 temples – the famed gates of Fushimi Inari-taisha are a must-see. Your final stop is Osaka, a fun and vibrant city with bustling streets, picturesque parks and authentic architecture. But the city is best known for its food scene – get ready to embrace the city’s mantra of kuidaore, which literally means 'eat until you drop'.
Sprawling and heaving, Japan’s capital is an assault on the senses. Tokyo is crammed with sleek skyscrapers, amazing sushi joints and all-night karaoke bars. But, amidst the chaos, you’ll come across tranquil gardens, ancient shrines and fascinating museums. With no shortage of things to see, your biggest challenge in Tokyo will be figuring out how to do it all.
In the area of Shinjuku you’ll find some of the world’s most striking skyscrapers and the city’s best shopping area. It’s also Tokyo’s leading entertainment district so there’s lots of nightlife, too. For a change of pace, head to Asakusa – one of Tokyo’s oldest neighbourhoods – to see historic temples.
Next, you’ll travel to a city filled UNESCO World Heritage Sites and literally thousands of temples, Kyoto. This place has earned its reputation as the spiritual heart of Japan. So if you’re keen to delve into Japanese culture and learn all about the country’s rich history and traditions, a few days in Kyoto will tick all your boxes.
The main attractions include the ornate Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji – also known as the Golden Pavilion and Silver Pavilion – plus the postcard-worthy Fushimi Inari-taisha, one of Japan’s most iconic shrines. Elsewhere, on the island of Honshu, you’ll find quaint streets packed with charming wooden teahouses, Shinto shrines and tranquil gardens.
Your trip wraps up in Osaka – a city which prides itself on its cheeky personality and great cuisine. Foodies will be in their element here. Whether you’re snacking on traditional dumplings from a street food vendor or sipping a cold beer in an izakaya pub, you can look forward to a very warm welcome. Make sure you visit Dotonbori Street, where you can watch as Osakan specialities are whipped up in front of your eyes, and fresh fish is transformed into perfectly presented sushi.
Aside from the food, other attractions include Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Castle and Osaka-jo Koen Park – which is particularly impressive during cherry blossom season in April.
