Planning a trip for 2023?

Well, we have a whole host of exciting options for you. From unmissable events, to great-value destinations, to new flight routes, 2023 is shaping up to be a great year to travel. But, when you have the whole world to choose from, where do you start?

Take a look at our handpicked list of the best places to visit in 2023. Whether you’re craving an all-out adventure, a relaxing beach break, or something in-between, we’ve got you covered.

The Philippines

Big news – we’re launching the Philippines as a new destination for Travelbag in 2023. If you’ve already explored a fair bit of Asia, this lesser-known gem should certainly be on your list. You can look forward to exotic beaches, lively cities and rumbling volcanoes. And, with more than 7,600 islands, the Philippines certainly offers plenty of choice.

You could explore the biggest isle, Luzon, where you’ll find the bustling capital of Manila, along with pea-green rice paddies and the impressive Mayon Volcano. Go snorkelling on the island of Cebu. Or why not hop over to Palawan? On the northern tip of the island, El Nido boasts some of the country’s best beaches, with sugar-white sands and bright turquoise waters. To top it all off, 2023 is a particularly exciting year to visit the Philippines, as the country celebrates 125 years of independence in June.

Sydney

There’s never a bad time to go on holiday to Sydney, but 2023 just might be one of the best years to go. The vibrant capital of New South Wales has a calendar full of events. They’re hosting WorldPride in February, and then Sydney Vivid sees the city come to life with light installations in May. Plus, the FIFA Women's World Cup is being held in Australia and New Zealand, with Sydney hosting the final in August.

As if that weren’t enough for you, the city’s most iconic landmark is celebrating a big birthday in 2023. The Sydney Opera House will turn 50 in October – but the party is running for the whole year. So you can join in with all sorts of events and shows, which showcase Australia’s past, present and future. Check out our handpicked Sydney hotels and start planning your trip.

Oman

If you’ve already been to a glittering Middle Eastern city, like Dubai, why not go somewhere more authentic in 2023? Despite its vast wealth, Oman has retained its rich culture and traditional charm. You can explore the bustling streets of the capital, Muscat, and visit fascinating Bedouin towns. Head into the mystical desert, where you can marvel at the UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort, and discover the craggy landscape of Jabal Al Akhdar.

And, if you want to extend you trip, Oman Air now offer flights to Phuket. So you could enjoy a few days seeing cultural sites and dramatic mountains, then spend a week relaxing in tropical Thailand.

Vietnam

The cost of living is predicted to continue rising in 2023, but some destinations still offer great-value holidays. We recently worked with the Post Office to find the best-value destinations – and Vietnam came top of the list. So, if you’re looking for a great holiday deal in 2023, this slice of Southeast Asia might just tick all your boxes.

You could spend a few days exploring Vietnam’s vibrant capital city, Hanoi, then sail around the stunning islands of Ha Long Bay. Discover the lantern-lined laneways of Hoi An, and stroll around Hue, whose UNESCO-recognised Imperial City is packed with temples and palaces. Or you could head to the southern tip of Vietnam, where you can discover energetic Ho Chi Minh City and the tropical Mekong Delta. Tempted? Find out more about our Vietnam holidays.

Aruba

From the end of March 2023, British Airways are launching flights from London Gatwick to Aruba – making this pint-sized island more accessible than ever before. So, if you fancy a relaxing beach break in 2023, this Caribbean island should be on your radar.

Only 20 miles long, this small-but-perfectly-formed isle is all about spending time on the beach. You can soak up some sunshine as you unwind on talc-like sands, and go swimming snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea. When you fancy exploring, why not spend some time in the capital, Oranjestad? Or embark on a thrilling 4x4 tour of the island.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka holidays have become increasingly popular in recent years. It’s not hard to see why, really, given its tropical interior, historical cities, amazing wildlife and balmy beaches. And now you have another reason to go – because, in 2023, we’re introducing Sri Lanka tours to cover Jaffna and the East Coast.

In the very north of Sri Lanka, remote Jaffna is actually closer to India than Colombo. But it’s worth the journey, as this interesting city is packed with cultural sites. You’ll be amazed by the architecture of Nallur Kandaswamy, an intricate Hindu temple, and the star-shaped Jaffna Fort, which dates back to the 17th century. With British, Dutch, Portuguese and Sinhalese influences, this eclectic city is a must-see for travellers who enjoy getting off the beaten track. And, while you’re there, you can go whale-watching in nearby Trincomalee?

South Africa

Last, but certainly not least, we think South Africa is one of the best places to visit in 2023. You can spend a few days in Cape Town seeing Table Mountain, Robben Island, and the adorable penguins of Boulders Beach. From there, you could go on a tour to the Cape Winelands, or hire a car and drive along the stunning Garden Route. Or why not embark on an unforgettable safari

Plus, getting there will be easier than ever, because British Airways have added a new route from London Gatwick to Cape Town. There’ll be three flights a week during winter, from mid-December 2022 until the end of March 2023. So ticking the Rainbow Nation off your bucket list has never been easier. Check out our South Africa tours and start planning.
