Top tips for travelling with toddlers

Get more inspiration

Family holidays create memories that last a lifetime.

Considering a holiday with your toddlers or young children? You’re about to enter a whole new world of family fun! Travelling with toddlers and young children can be exciting but also a minefield - from packing everything you need for the journey ahead to keeping the little ones entertained whilst you’re there - preparation is key. If you want to swap temper tantrums for sunshine-filled serenity, follow our top tips.

Tell Them What To Expect

If your children are old enough to understand, talking to them and telling them what they can expect can help greatly. Letting them watch a video on YouTube can also be a good idea. Something quick and straightforward that talks them through the flight experience should do the trick. The experience will be much smoother and stress-free when they’re clued up about what’s happening.

Pack Like A Pro

Packing the essentials couldn’t be more important when heading on holiday with toddlers and young children. But remember, you can always buy anything you forget while away! Backpacks are an excellent option for hand luggage, as you can carry belongings while keeping your hands free to attend to your kids. Some essential items for packing include spare clothes, baby wipes, armbands, and their favourite comfort toy. Don’t forget to pack for yourself too! Water and refreshments are also vital. But these can always be bought at the airport or on the plane.

Be Prepared

Travelling with toddlers can be highly unpredictable, so our best advice is to be as prepared as possible. If your toddler has a temperature or an upset stomach, there’s nothing worse than being on a plane or in another country without the usual medical supplies. Keep the situation as stress-free as possible by bringing everything you need. Consider taking Calpol sachets, ear drops, and maybe some hand sanitiser. The more prepared you are, the better.

Play Before The Plane

Ensure a hassle-free plane journey with the kids by letting them run wild before boarding the plane! Some airports have family and play areas for the children to enjoy - these places are perfect for burning up all that energy. Allow them to explore the airport, look out at the planes taking off, or start a quick game of eye spy to keep them entertained. Activities like these are a great way to ensure they are tired enough to feel content on the plane journey ahead. And they may even be tired enough for a nap on the plane, which is always a bonus!

Home-From-Home Comforts

Going on holiday is an incredible feeling for everyone and especially exciting for toddlers. But it can sometimes be overwhelming for them - they may miss home sooner than you think! How about bringing their favourite soft toy to give them a sense of home? It can make all the difference. A cosy blanket or a pillow could also be a great comfort for them.

Arrive Early

You may notice a pattern here. Most of our tips relate to being early and organised. Kids can be unpredictable, and you never know what’s around the corner - especially when travelling.

It’s best to avoid rushing through the airport with your hand luggage on one arm and a toddler on the other! Arrive at the airport early, and you’ll have time for a stroll around duty-free. How about using the extra time to enjoy a bite to eat? Or you could ensure you’re first in line to secure your overhead compartment space on the plane. The more time you have, the better.

Digital Entertainment

It would be great if the kids could enjoy themselves the entire holiday, but there are bound to be moments when they’ll need extra entertainment. There are books, card games and toys, but digital tablets are your best friend if you’re looking for a quick fix. This is because they are packed with toddler-friendly games and sensory activities to help with their learning development, and they weigh much less than big bulky toys or books.

Your toddler-friendly holiday awaits

Travelling with toddlers and young children is a world of fun, and as long you’re well-equipped, they’ll be happy, and so will you! The most important thing is making those family memories you can cherish for a lifetime. Don’t wait any longer. Book your family holiday with Travelbag today!
