10 Reasons to Book a Long Weekend in Dubai

At this time of year, a lot of us start to crave a few days of sunshine. But all the hot destinations are too far away for a long weekend, right? Wrong! If you want to escape your everyday routine and soak up some much-needed vitamin D – without using too much annual leave – we have the solution.

A long weekend in Dubai is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. You’ll only need to take a day or two off work, and you’ll return feeling refreshed and revitalised – and, crucially, your sun-soaked mini-break won’t cost you the Earth. Plus, with regular flights and minimal travel time, this Middle Eastern metropolis is closer than you think. Tempted? Here are 10 reasons why you should book a long weekend in Dubai.

1. You’re guaranteed good weather

The sun is always shining in Dubai. Even between November and March, temperatures hover in the mid-twenties – making Dubai a much better choice for winter sun than the likes of Cyprus, Turkey and the Canary Islands. If that’s too short notice, though, consider going in April or May. You’ll have a little more time to get organised and, as an added bonus, the mercury regularly reaches 32 degrees.

2. It’s a short flight

A direct flight from the UK to Dubai takes just seven hours. By the time you’ve watched a film and had a bite to eat, you’ll practically be there. Plus, you’ve got loads of UK airports to choose from, so you can book the most convenient option for you. Direct flights to Dubai are available from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and more.

3. You can hit the beach

In winter, there aren’t many mini-break options that allow you to have some quality beach time, as most places are still too cold – but not Dubai. There are a number of public beaches here, as well as hotel-owned stretches of sand, where you can swim, snorkel and try your hand at watersports. You’ll find plenty of beach clubs and bars on the seafront, too, ready for when you want some shade or a bite to eat.

4. You’ll reach your hotel in no time

Dubai is famous for its record-breaking buildings and soaring skyscrapers. But this grand city is actually very compact. Most sea-view hotels are either on the tree-shaped Palm Jumeirah island, dotted along Jumeirah Beach or clustered around Dubai Marina – all of which are just a 30-minute drive from the airport. Or, if you’re staying in Downtown Dubai, you can expect a transfer time of just 20 minutes. And speaking of hotels…

5. Dubai’s hotels are incredible

It’s called the City of Superlatives for a reason – and Dubai’s hotels are no exception. You can expect beachfront locations, plush suites, and a restaurant for every day of the week. At the iconic Burj Al Arab, for instance, you’ll have a menu of nine pillow options and a full-size Jacuzzi in your bathroom. Plus, a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce can pick you up from the airport. Alternatively, if you’re travelling with kids, check out Atlantis The Palm. This family-friendly hotel boasts a private beach, an enormous water park and Dubai’s largest aquarium.

6. There’s an endless list of things to do

You can easily fill three or four days in Dubai. It’s best to start off Downtown, where you’ll find the gigantic Dubai Mall – housing 1,300 shops – and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. For staggering panoramic views across the city, head to the observation deck on floor 124. Or, if you don’t have the head for heights, visit in the evening to watch the Dubai Fountains. Inspired by the famous Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas, these dancing fountains come to life after dark.

But, contrary to popular belief, Dubai isn’t all about futuristic skyscrapers. You can step back in time in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and surround yourself with traditional architecture. Dubai Old Town is also worth visiting. Explore the Dubai Museum, and weave your way through the Spice Souk and Gold Souk, where you’ll find all kinds of treasures. Prefer to have an adrenaline adventure? Head out into the desert on a dune-bashing 4x4 safari. Take a look at our exciting Dubai excursions, which tick off all the major attractions.

7. The time difference is minimal

Dubai is only four hours ahead of the UK, so you don’t need to worry about jet lag – ideal if you’re travelling with young children. The small time difference also comes in handy for your return flight home. If you book a lunchtime flight, you’ll land back in the UK by 5pm, which gives you plenty of time to get home and have a good night’s sleep before going back to work (sorry!)

8. Dubai’s a great mini-break for foodies

You can eat your way around the world in Dubai. From romantic French bistros and edgy rooftop bars, to Peruvian restaurants and Michelin-starred chefs, this city has it all. And, you’ll be pleased to know, a lot of these high-flying restaurants are included in hotel’s half board packages. The hardest part will be choosing where to go.

If you’re really into your food, book your trip so you’re in Dubai on a Friday – it’s the day to go for brunch. Order Mediterranean-themed dishes in Bulgari Yacht Club, feast on an extravagant buffet at Splendido Bar & Kitchen, or enjoy sushi and sake at world-famous Nobu. Fancy a sweet treat? Make sure you book afternoon tea in The Lounge. Up on floor 154 of the Burj Khalifa, this place serves up panoramic views alongside fresh pastries and dainty desserts.

9. You can treat it as a taster holiday

If you’ve never been to this part of the world, a long weekend in Dubai offers the perfect introduction. You can get a feel for the climate and culture, without committing to a week-long holiday. And, if you like what you see – which we’re confident you will – you can always come back. Perhaps you’ll add on a day trip to Abu Dhabi next time, or you’ll drive across the desert towards the dramatic mountains of Fujairah? Or, you could spend a week here before jetting off to Sri Lanka or the Maldives – the possibilities are endless.

10. We have some amazing Dubai deals

Dubai’s decadence can sound unaffordable, but you might be pleasantly surprised. A long weekend in Dubai needn’t break the bank. Lots of four-star hotels in Dubai offer budget-friendly B&B options, and even some five-star hotels – like JW Marriott Marquis Dubai and Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Beach – don’t cost as much as you might think.

Plus, a lot of Dubai hotels offer all-inclusive packages, so all your meals, snacks and drinks are covered in one great-value price. With so much choice, all-inclusive hotels are perfect for families, as even fussy little eaters are bound to find something they like. If you’re looking for family-friendly all-inclusive hotels, we’d recommend JA Beach Hotel, JA Lake View or JA Palm Tree Court.
