Top 10 Best-Value Long-Haul Destinations

by Travelbag on 16 September 2019, 11:09AM

When you’re choosing a holiday destination, the price of accommodation and the cost of flights are usually the two biggest determining factors. But the additional costs once you’re there should also be taken into consideration – particularly with sterling in its current state.

A weak pound means that, in many places, you can expect to pay more than you would have a year ago – even in destinations where local prices have fallen. So if you’re planning a winter getaway, careful planning is imperative.

Luckily, our friends at the Post Office have figured out which long-haul destinations currently offer the best value for money. As the UK’s leading provider of foreign currency, they’ve compiled a barometer table outlining costs for 10 typical tourist items, including meals, drinks, sunscreen and insect repellent. The Post Office’s Long Haul Holiday Report shows what you’re likely to pay in some of the world’s most popular long-haul destinations. Find out in which ones you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

Tokyo, Japan

Rugby fans heading to Tokyo for this year’s Rugby World Cup, rejoice! While the match tickets themselves may have cost you a pretty penny, holiday essentials when you get there won’t cause too much of a dent in your wallet. Its barometer total may have risen 4.7% – to £60 – but this is due to the weak pound. Japan’s capital is actually one of 15 destinations where local prices have fallen. And it’s a whopping 42% cheaper than in 2013, when the Post Office first surveyed prices in the city.

Cape Town, South Africa

Now’s the time to embark on that African adventure you always dreamed of. Cape Town may have lost its crown to Tokyo this year, but its barometer total of £61 is still less than half that in 11 other long-haul destinations. A three-course meal for two here, including wine, will set you back just £35 – bargain. If you’re looking for things to do in this South African city, read our guide on how to spend 48 hours in Cape Town.

Cape Town

Bali, Indonesia

Prices in this popular Indonesian island have actually risen by almost 13% since last September. With a barometer total of £72, holiday essentials in Bali now cost around £12 more than they do in either Tokyo or Cape Town. But, despite the rise, Bali retains its third position in the Post Office table, and remains the cheapest destination in Southeast Asia. Why not visit some other Indonesian islands while you’re there?

Hoi An, Vietnam

Like many places in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is notoriously cheap. And now has never been a better time to visit. Prices in Hoi An are down 1.6%, putting the barometer total at £75. So, if you’re looking for an alternative to Bali that won’t cost a lot more, consider this colourful city, with its atmospheric Old Town and beautiful riverside setting.

Hoi An

Mombasa, Kenya

The Kenyan shilling is stronger than it was a year ago, meaning that prices in Mombasa have risen 11.5% since 2018. That said, this exciting city on Kenya’s coast still ranks as the fifth best value long-haul destination. Essentials here will cost you just 14p more than in Hoi An, and 76p more than in Bali.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s dynamic capital re-emerges in sixth place on this year’s list. While endless beaches and verdant tea plantations are Sri Lanka’s biggest draw, it’s worth spending some time in Colombo as well. With its impressive colonial architecture and delectable street food, it’s a good place to begin or end your trip – particularly when the essentials will only set you back £80. If you need more persuading, here are 10 reasons why you should book a holiday to Sri Lanka.

Cancun, Mexico

Craving a Caribbean getaway without the eye-watering price tag? Check out Cancun. Whether you’re looking for endless stretches of powdery white sand, an introduction to Mayan culture, or hedonistic parties that go until the early hours, Mexico’s premier resort town has something for everyone. And beer drinkers will be thrilled to hear that a bottle of local larger will only cost you £1!

St John’s, Antigua

Prices in the Antiguan capital St John’s have fallen a huge 28% this year, making this Caribbean hotspot the eighth best value destination. Craving some winter sun? Check out our incredible all-inclusive Antigua deals.

St John's

Orlando, USA

Going away with children can be particularly expensive, but local prices in the world’s theme park capital have actually fallen marginally since 2018. Although a weak exchange rate means you can expect to pay 6.5% more than last year, Orlando is still one of the best long-haul destinations for a family holiday. And a glass of wine is actually 53p cheaper than last year – good to know for when the kids are driving you crazy!

Penang, Malaysia

The northwest Malaysian state of Penang rounds out this year’s top 10. Since 2008, its colonial-era capital George Town has enjoyed UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status. A melting pot of people and culture, it’s famed for the large scale murals that line its streets. Head away from the city and you’ll find the coast lined with palm-fringed beaches. The ones close to George Town can be crowded, though, so head to those inside Penang National Park.

According to the Post Office, a three-course evening meal for two here will set you back £55. But Penang is considered to serve up some of the best street food in all of Asia, so we recommend skipping the restaurants all together and heading to a hawker centre instead.
