Best Places for Winter Sun

Winter sun Thailand

Ah, winter. It’s a magical time of festive markets, mulled wine and twinkling lights – but distinctly lacking in sunshine. After a few months of getting up in the dark, you might find yourself in desperate need of some vitamin D. Luckily for you, we know the best destinations for a winter sun holiday. Whether you’re looking for a cheap winter warmer or a luxury getaway over New Year’s Eve, these sizzling places hit the spot.

Dubai

You don’t have to travel far for winter sun. The flight from the UK to Dubai takes less than seven hours, but the climates are worlds apart. Winter is a great time to visit Dubai, as temperatures hover between the mid-twenties and early-thirties. So you can sunbathe on the beach and relax by the pool in comfort, before the fierce desert summer arrives. But if do you need a break from the heat, there are hundreds of air-conditioned places where you can cool down, including shopping malls, chic restaurants and an indoor ski slope. Read our top tips on how to stay cool in Dubai.

Costa Rica

Winter sun holidays typically involve a lot of beach time – but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’re the kind of person who gets itchy feet after two days of sunbathing, consider Costa Rica. With rainforests, volcanoes and endless wildlife, this tropical country is an adventurer’s dream. Plus, the dry season runs from mid-November to April, so winter is definitely the best time to go. Go hiking in search of lazy sloths, and spot colourful hummingbirds and toucans among the trees. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an adrenaline junkie, buckle up and go zip-lining through the forest, or enjoy a day of daredevil canyoning along rushing rivers and tumbling waterfalls. Tempted? Mauritius

When it comes to winter beach holidays, Mauritius is an excellent choice for both couples and families. Temperatures consistently float around 30 degrees during winter, so you can make the most of the white sands, coral reefs and other exciting places in Mauritius. Your trip doesn’t need to be expensive, either. When you book an all-inclusive Mauritius holiday, your flights, accommodation, meals and drinks are all covered by one great-value price.

Australia

The seasons Down Under are the complete opposite of the UK. While we’re shivering in the middle of winter, it’s the height of summer in Australia. On the east coast, Sydney basks in high-twenties sunshine, and Cairns and Brisbane are even hotter. So if you’ve always wanted to go on an Aussie road trip, winter is a great time to do it. You can snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, learn to surf in Byron Bay, and walk across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Alternatively, book a holiday to Western Australia to see dramatic beaches, amazing wildlife and laidback Perth – the sunniest city in Oz. If you time your trip right, you might even see some wild whale sharks.

Thailand

If you’re looking for a cheap winter sun holiday, Thailand is a firm favourite. Despite its incredible popularity, the ‘Land of Smiles’ remains a budget-friendly destination – a beer costs around £2, while dinner for two will set you back about £15. Better still, November to February is the dry season, making winter the best time to go. Wherever you are, you can look forward to toasty temperatures in the thirties. Discover the temples, nightlife and delicious Thai street food of Bangkok, explore rainforests and beautiful beaches in Krabi, or unwind in a luxury resort in Koh Samui.

Barbados

Sometimes, all you want is sun, sea and sand – and Barbados has it in spades. This tranquil Caribbean island boasts miles and miles of picture-perfect beaches. This, coupled with its 27-degree sunshine, makes it one of the top choices for a lazy winter sun holiday. You can curl up with a book beneath the swaying palm trees, swim in the bath-warm waters, and take a trip to Crane Beach to see its famous blush-coloured sands. To top it off, a direct flight from the UK to Barbados takes less than nine hours. You’ll be on the beach in no time...
