How to Spend 24 Hours in Singapore

by Travelbag on 12 June 2019, 09:06AM

Singapore Skyline

Singapore’s Changi airport is one of Southeast Asia’s largest transportation hubs, and a popular layover for those making their way to tourist hotpots such as Sydney, Auckland and Bali. While Changi is consistently voted one of the best airports in the world, the city beyond also has plenty to offer. With its rich culture, modern architecture and Michelin starred-street food, Singapore is not simply a place to change planes but a destination in itself – one well worth exploring before picking up your onward connection. Here’s our handy 24-hour itinerary for things to do in this city-state.

8am – Breakfast

Start your day off right by fuelling up with a traditional breakfast. Heap Seng Leong is one of the oldest Kopitiams, or coffee shops, left in Singapore and the perfect place to try kaya toast (a toasted sandwich filled with butter and coconut jam) and kopi gu you (Singapore’s answer to bulletproof coffee, containing condensed milk and melted butter).

9am – Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

After breakfast, jump on the City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour – the best way to navigate this compact city and ensure you don’t miss any of its main attractions. The government has strict regulations about who can own a car so vehicle numbers are limited, meaning traffic flows smoothly throughout the city.

10am – Botanic Gardens

After about an hour on the bus you’ll reach the Botanic Gardens. Spread over 60 acres, these serene and spectacular gardens are one of only three in the world to be given UNESCO World Heritage status – the other two being Kew Gardens in London and the Padua Gardens in Italy. Spend some time here strolling along the boardwalks, marvelling at the tropical flora.

12pm – Lunch at a Hawker Centre

After leaving the Botanic Gardens it’s time to re-board the bus and hit up one of the city’s many hawker centres. At these alfresco dining spots you can sample local delicacies like hokkien mee, nasi lemak and laksa, all at affordable prices.

1.30pm – Shopping on Orchard Road

As you journey back down town after lunch why not indulge in a spot of retail therapy? This bustling boulevard is Singapore’s premier shopping street, where multiple malls house international designer brands alongside independent local labels.

3pm – Gardens by the Bay

Once you’ve finishing splashing the cash on Orchard Road, make your way over to Gardens by the Bay – a futuristic nature park showcasing plant life from around the world. Highlights include the Cloud Forest, the Flower Dome and Supertree Grove.

Gardens by the Bay

5.30pm – Marina Bay Sands

A short walk from Gardens by the Bay lies Marina Bay Sands – Singapore’s most iconic resort. The Sands Sky Park, situated atop this 57-storey complex, offers unparalleled views across the city and is the perfect place to watch the sunset. If you’ve booked to stay at this exclusive hotel, you can enjoy the panoramic vistas while taking a soak in the world’s largest rooftop infinity pool.

7pm – Dinner

Singapore has no fewer than 39 Michelin-starred restaurants so, having lunched like a local, it seems only fair that you treat yourself to a more extravagant dinner. There’s something to suit every palate but our favourites are Odette and Candlenut.

9pm – Cocktails at Raffles

No trip to Singapore would be complete without a visit to the famous Raffles Hotel. Once you’re done marvelling at the lavish, colonial-inspired architecture, make a beeline for the legendary Long Bar and finish your night sipping on a Singapore Sling in the very place where it was invented.
