Mauritius is a famous holiday destination for its golden sands but there is more to the island than just beaches. There are many places to visit including historical French houses, shops, forests and gardens. Here are some of the best things to do.

Chamarel Waterfall & Black River Gorges National Park

At 83 metres tall, Chamarel is the highest waterfall in Mauritius. You'll find it in Black River Gorges National Park, where the viewing platform is reached by climbing stairs. Combine the trip with a visit to a group of sand dunes known as the Seven Coloured Earth. The dunes are made of crushed volcanic rock which cooled at different temperatures into distinct browns, reds and purples. Stretching over 6,574 hectares, this huge national park is home to the pink pigeon, a rare native bird. Go prepared to walk long trails taking in forests, wildlife, and views of the island’s landscape.

Port Louis

Many people travel to Port Louis for its shopping and retail but it also has cultural attractions such as The Blue Penny Museum, mosques, churches, and temples. At the end of the day, take a walk with the locals up Signal Mountain to view sunset over the city.

La Vanille Nature Park

The crocodile is the main attraction here for many, but you can also see giant turtles and bats, monkeys, iguanas and a large collection of insects. Walk through the jungle learning about flora and fauna of the island then sample some delicacies at the Hungry Crocodile restaurant.
