If the thought of stopping by a truly Instagrammable brunch spot with a menu bursting with delicious dishes and exceptional coffee during your first morning in Darwin is at the forefront of your mind during the long-haul flight ahead of you, keep the faith because you're in for a real treat! Darwin has all your brunch desires covered, and here are just a few places where you won't be able to stop yourself from snapping pictures during your visit – the food, decor, lighting and general ambience are just too perfect not to document them.

The Roma Bar, Cavenagh Street

The Roma Bar is a bit of an institution in Darwin, with many locals able to recall countless fond memories spent catching up with friends over a first-class coffee, freshly squeezed juice and a delicious brunch. The dark, textured tiles with copper accents, modern retro lighting, rich wooden chairs and a plethora of plants and flowers contribute to the ambient atmosphere that's so Instagram-worthy – it's essentially Pinterest perfect. There is also a beautiful outside terrace for those warm, sunshine-filled late mornings, which is comfortable and concealed enough to retain that same chilled-out ambience.

Their menu is a veritable delight of everything that makes brunch so delicious, with banana pancakes and palm syrup, smashed avocado and feta on sourdough with smoked salmon, toasties with a variety of fillings and classic fruit salads with honey and Greek yoghurt. Everything is served in elegant crockery, so your social feeds will definitely feature more than a few snaps of such swoon-worthy dishes.

The Pearl, The Victoria Arcade in the Smith Street Mall

Described by many as a true Darwinian gem, The Pearl is tucked inside the iconic Victoria Arcade in the Smith Street Mall. As you step inside, you'll be greeted by gorgeous tropical wallpaper complemented by elegant wooden furniture and modern, brilliantly white subway-style tiles. Everything in this concealed oasis has been considered, from the outstanding decor to the attentive team, who can recommend something truly tasty from the menu if you're finding yourself spoilt for choice.

Their various coffees are all deliciously smooth, with a variety of cocktails and fresh juices also available to accompany your meal. Renowned for their Pearl burger, smashed avocado, poached eggs and bubble and squeak dishes, the team are truly focused on providing high-quality food within an elegant and sophisticated dining environment.

Alley Cats Patisserie, Mitchell Street

This artisanal patisserie specialises in honest and authentic cooking and boasts an exceptional menu bursting with pastries, sourdough sandwiches, croissants and a variety of other brunch options. Hidden away from the hustle and bustle, you can expect to tuck into your food surrounded by tranquillity and greenery, with a selection of beautiful murals in the courtyard proving to be excellent and very popular pre-brunch selfie-taking spots.

They pride themselves on their freshly prepared dishes, and settling on a dish to sample always proves to be a little tricky at this delicious eatery. Choose from crunchy toasted granola served with vanilla bean panna cotta, honey and a berry compote, waffles with gingerbread parfait, toasted marshmallows, pumpkin custard, maple syrup and pecans, as well as their famous farmer's feed, which comprises poached eggs on sourdough with asparagus, chorizo/halloumi, tomatoes, house beans, mushrooms and hollandaise. With much more on the menu besides, it is easy to see why Alley Cats has established itself as a must-visit location for both locals and visitors alike.

Rabbithole, The Mall

This petite establishment makes a big first impression, with deep walls, industrial loft-style open shelving, bench seating and a quirky rabbit mural instantly capturing the eye and telling you everything you need to know about the ultra-cool vibe of this unique coffee and brunch spot, Rabbithole. Specialising in modern Australian cuisine with organic, vegetarian and vegan options available, this is an eatery that everyone can enjoy. With its outstanding service and an unforgettably delicious menu, you might just find yourself in here more than once during your holiday.

There are almost too many highly recommended dishes to mention, but their burgers served in soft and buttery brioche buns, rich and flavourful baked eggs and generous breakfast boards featuring candied bacon, hummus and cauliflower hash browns, amongst many other delicious components, are all truly tempting choices. They're also pretty famous for their indulgent milkshakes, but if a coffee or a fresh juice is more your thing, you certainly won't be disappointed.

Eva's Botanic Gardens Café, George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

The award for the most picturesque setting simply must go to Eva's. Surrounded by a variety of magical woodlands, monsoon forests and mangroves, the atmosphere inside this beautiful café is equally as breathtaking, which is no small feat and is a credit to the creativity, vision and design flair of the owners.

The team at Eva's are knowledgeable and passionate, only using the freshest ingredients in their flavourful and generously portioned dishes. The menu is varied and oh so tempting, with the possibility of enjoying, amongst many other options: a chia pot with seasonal fruits, almond milk and bee pollen; a freshly made salad; an indulgent sourdough toasty; or an egg gribiche, which is a boiled egg emulsion with gherkins, capers, mayo and mustard served on sourdough.

Expert baristas are on hand to help you choose from a selection of speciality teas and coffees, with milkshakes and iced drinks also making wonderful choices. Eva's freshly baked chocolate brownies are a cult favourite amongst regular visitors, so we definitely recommend picking up a couple before you leave to wander a little more around the extraordinarily beautiful botanic gardens.
