Be delighted by Doha

by Travelbag on 14 March 2017, 17:03PM

Rising in popularity in the Middle East, Qatar is contemporary, charming and charismatic, and not forgetting one of the richest places on the planet. Embracing modernity with futuristic and beautiful architecture, the capital city of Doha, is growing steadily day-by-day.

Explore on foot

Situated on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Doha is home to the majority of Qatar’s hotels, shopping malls, museums and other tourist attractions. Offering the best views of the city is the Doha Corniche – a seven kilometre long waterfront promenade and park, stretching in a semi-circle around the entire length of Doha Bay. The vistas of the city are simply spectacular and the beautifully lit night skyline is especially dramatic.

Be captivated by culture

Just to the east of the Corniche you’ll find Al Bidda – the historic heart of Doha - with an array of vibrant sights and experiences. Souq Waqif (literally translated to ‘the standing market’) is still one of the most traditional marketplaces in the region and is a maze of bustling alleyways and beautiful restored buildings. Look out for spices, perfumes and oud – exotic incense made from agar-wood.

Many are drawn to the area for its cultural attractions of falconry, horse racing and camel racing.

Hit the shops

As well as the traditional souqs, Qatar is home to some pretty impressive shopping centres like the impressive Villaggio. Situated next to the Hamad bin Khalifa sports stadium, the Villaggio is more than just a shopping centre, and even features an indoor Venetian canal complete with gondola rides. The range of shopping, dining and entertainment available here makes is a unique and unforgettable attraction in Qatar and one not to be missed.

Grab a bite to eat

Doha provides a diverse collection of International cuisines, as well as the chance to try some exciting Arabic dishes. When night starts to fall we’d definitely recommend heading to Souq Waqif. Head through the recently renovated bazaar, taking in authentic Arabian sights and smells, the take your pick of the souq’s many restaurants and sample some of the local dishes.
