Craft Beer: Five American Breweries Worth a Visit
by on 01 December 2017, 10:12AM
From bootlegging and prohibition to California’s world beating wines – America’s love affair with booze has had its ups and downs. Right now, in the beer world at least, it’s up. Last year America hit a record 5,000 breweries nationwide, a bad time to be going into business, given all the competition but for drinkers – it’s easy street.
We’ve assembled a short list of some of our favourite craft breweries. We’ve gone for real craft, by which we mean traditional, small time non mechanised production of distinctive beer. So if you’re planning a holiday to San Francisco, Boston or California’s San Diego, read on and add a tasting tour to your American itinerary why don’t you.
San Diego, Mikkeller
Gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and his Ale Smith Brewing Company accomplice Peter Zien have been collaborating out of their San Diego brewery on Cabot Drive since April last year. The Raspberry Blush from the core range is an intensive first-of-the-day beverage but Mikkeller will have you starting earlier than you’d planned with their Beer Geek ‘Breakfast’ and ‘Brunch’ brews.

Boston, Harpoon
Best known for its India Pale Ale, Harpoon produces numerous award winning beers. If you’re on holiday in Boston, call in for a year round, seasonal or special batch pint at the Harpoon Beer Hall. Take in the Boston skyline as you alternate between the salty crunch of German style pretzels that inspires thirst and the cool refreshing beer that quenches it.

Fremont, Seattle
Fremont has three locations across the Emerald City. The Fremont East and West breweries take care of production and the Urban Beer Garden a short walk from Gas Works Park is open from 11am – 9pm every day. There’s ‘games to play’ (we assume this is board and drinking games) and the staff are friendly and well informed. ‘Bring your own food’ rules apply, excluding the complimentary apples and pretzels.

Ommegang, upstate New York
Belgian wheat beers in the heart of upstate New York. The nearby Inn at Cooperstown offers the Bed & Brew; transportation and a multi-course food and beer pairing dinner. Otherwise, there are tours and inexpensive tastings daily. It’s a ten minute drive between the Inn and the Brewery but if you’re here in the fall, ditch your driver and walk the two hours back to your accommodation, taking in the colours of the autumnal foliage along the way.

Rogue Ales, Oregon
Started back in 1988, Rogue Ales is as involved in the farming process at is the brewing; they grow their own hops and malting barley and any other ingredients they require for their beers, such as pumpkins and honey. Their flagship brewpub overlooks Newport’s bay front and has a party room for birthdays or gatherings. It’s also perfectly situated for a before/after walk into Yaquina State Park which has a historic lighthouse and acres of ocean dunes and forested bluff.
