The Top Tried & Tested New South Wales Road Trip

by Travelbag on 13 September 2016, 14:09PM

Self drive and campervan or motorhome holidays are becoming increasingly popular due to the flexibility they offer in seeing a place and also the great value they provide, especially when you are off to the other side of the world exploring Australia and New Zealand.

Travelbag's Travel Experts in Australia

While the beauty of a self drive holiday is that you get to stop whenever and wherever you see something interesting, it is good to have a plan to make the most of your time. As New South Wales is one of our most popular self drive spots, we sent a group of travel experts on a road trip down east coast, from Byron Bay to Sydney. Here is where they recommend you stop down the legendary pacific coast:

Byron Bay:

Byron Bay Australia

Byron Bay is best known for its incredible wide beaches and its laidback, bohemian lifestyle. Don't bother unpacking your high heels here, this is jeans and flip flops country. A lot of your time here should focus around the wide golden beach, with surfing and kayaking a must here. Our travel experts learnt to surf with Let's Go Surfing and Cape Byron Kayak, read about their experience here. If you would rather stay out the water, then a walk up to the lighthouse is a must for stunning coastal views. Take some time to wander round town, listen to the local musicians, practice some yoga and soak up the atmosphere, but try to remember to leave at some point (there is many a traveller that hasn't left!).

Coffs Harbour:

Coffs Harbour area

If you are travelling with kids, or if you're just young at heart, Coffs is a must-stop. It is known all over Australia for being the home to the “Big Banana”, a great all-weather theme park full of activities such as tobogganing, laser quest, ice skating, shopping and the famous chocolate dipped bananas. A stay overnight in Coffs Harbour will not only leave you well rested after an action packed day, but gives you the chance to get up early, by which we mean dawn kind of early, to spot the kangaroos hopping around Emerald Beach.

Port Macquarie:

Port Macquarie

This lovely little seaside town is home to two of our Travel Experts’ favourite attractions: the Koala Hospital and the Cassegrain Winery. The Koala Hospital a charitable organization which looks after sick and disabled koalas. The stories are mesmerizing and the cute factor is very high. After a guided tour, head to the Cassegrain Winery for tour with wine tasting, followed by dinner to accompany your new favourite wine. For those keen to stay active, there is a 9km coastal walk starting from the town beach taking in gorgeous little coves along the coast.

Port Stephens:

Port Stephens Whale Watching

The Port Stephens area is home to lots of lovely little bays with their own port. The highlight of stopping here is the chance to go whale watching, which often includes dolphin and seal spotting. After a day out at sea, relaxing at a waterside restaurant makes for a perfect evening. The seafood is at its most fresh here, leading to some great restaurant options. A favourite of our travel experts, was Little Beach Boathouse, Nelson Bay. Ideally enjoyed by sitting in the sunshine on the deck with a glass of local New South Wales wine in hand.

Sydney:

Sydney

This deserves a whole blog on its own, so check out our guide to how to spend 72 hours in Sydney.

This trip can also be completed the other way round starting in Sydney. It can be done in 7 days or if you have longer, why not head inland to the Blue Mountains for beautiful views and sumptuous wine!

Sold on the itinerary but not sure about campervan life yet? Quality hotels are a plenty on this route. Speak to a Travel Expert for their recommendations and top deals for every aspect of this trip.
