The best local transport from around the world

by Travelbag on 15 September 2016, 16:09PM

Local transport can help make a holiday, it’s possibly the best way to see an area and get to know it like local. On top of this, it gets you from one view to the next amazing sight for a reasonable price. In some of the best locations, the transport is one of the best attractions. Here's a short list of our favourites you have to experience, all well worthy of a place on your bucket list.

Rio de Janeiro Cable Car, Brazil

Rio De Janeiro Cable Car

Made famous from the iconic James Bond scene in Moonraker, this Brazilian cable car takes you to the summit of Rio’s famous Sugarloaf Mountain at the mouth of Gualala Bay. From here you can see all of Rio, including the major sites of Christ the Redeemer, Ipanema beach, and Copacabana.

Shinkansen, Japan

Japan's bullet train

Otherwise known as the ‘Bullet Train’ this train is something you MUST experience, however, we do warn that once you return you’ll hate your daily commute even more. A view of the underground walls just doesn’t compare to the views around Shizuoka, which offers views of Japan’s famous tea plantations and the monstrous Mt Fuji. Also, don’t forget your Bento Box, a Japanese packed lunch filled with traditional food.

San Francisco Cable Car, USA

San Francisco, California

The cable cars have been an icon of San Francisco streets since 1878, creating an easy way to traverse the hilly city.  The world’s last manually operated cable car system is a registered US historic landmark, and one of few places in the world you can ride a landmark! Also, riding a cable car means you get the added thrill of being able to hang off the edge, and feel the 9mph winds blow through your hair.

Hong Kong Victoria Peak Tram, Hong Kong

Hong Kong

This magnificent funicular tram takes you up the 400m of Victoria Peak in just 1.4km of track. The tramway induces an illusion wherein the buildings of Hong Kong appear to fall into the mountain. When you reach the top, you’ll be blown away by the panoramic views of one the world’s most stunning harbours with amazing skyscrapers lining up against it.  Plan to arrive here about 30 minutes before sundown and watch the city come to life in a varicoloured brilliance of lights.

New York Taxi, USA

New York City

There isn’t another form of public transport with the legendary status of New York’s yellow cab. With over 13 000 licensed taxicab medallions in New York, you won’t have a problem hailing one down to take you to your next landmark.

Bangkok Water Taxi, Thailand

Bangkok

There’s probably no better way to see Bangkok than by its Khlongs (canals). Sorry, we can’t resist using the cliché of ‘Venice of the east’ but, the canals offer amazing views of Bangkok and are home to a special atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. To make the most of this extraordinary atmosphere, visit the amazing spectacle of a floating market; these markets sell a range of goods from fresh produce to beautifully hand-crafted trinkets!

Here’s a quick guide to Bangkok to help you plan your holiday.
