Ultimate Guide to Jordan: Top 7 Things to do

by Travelbag on 04 October 2016, 18:10PM

The Middle East offers experiences like no other and the cultural heart of this gorgeous area has to be the spiritual home of the famed ‘Lawrence of Arabia’; an ancient hub the world's revolved around as long as there have been records. We are, of course, talking about Jordan.

1. Petra

Petra

Love Indiana Jones? Why not visit the final resting place of ‘The Last Crusade’? This ancient 102sq mile city is famous for more than a cameo appearance in the cult classic. The spectacular sandstone city boasts a massive array of its own sights such as the mystical entrance – the Siq. The 1.2km passage through a high-walled canyon has to be the best entrance to any amusement, ever. Then, there’s the city itself; carved into the high rising canyon walls to create an unbelievable rocky façade. Witnessing this modern wonder of the world lit up by candles is an experience you’ll never forget.

2. Dead Sea

Dead Sea

As on of the world’s first health resorts, you could find yourself bathing in the same waters as Herod the Great and Cleopatra.  The Dead Sea is famed for the ease of floating and mineral rich mud banks that surround it. The Dead Sea is a perfect way to spend a day of therapy treating any skin conditions or stress that ails you but, don’t forget to take an iconic reading snap of yourself.

3. Road Trip

Kings Highway

The huge varying landscape of Jordan screams exploration and we can’t think of a better way to explore than a road trip! One of the highlight roads you’ll find in Jordan is the ‘Kings Highway’, a long meandering road that travels through the majority of Jordan with the opportunity to stop off at different landscapes.

4. Ruins in Amman

Amman

If ever you wanted proof of how desirable a location is, just take a look at Jordan and it’s range of colonies desperate to call it home. The wide range of conquests that took place here has left a treasure of varied ruins, from the Roman amphitheatre to the grand Umayyad Palace.

5. Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum

The Wadi Rum is a beautiful red brick desert in the south of Jordan. This gorgeous desert has been the backdrop of many films starting with ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, to as recent as the Matt Damon blockbuster ‘The Martian’. The rum is favoured for its range of trials and activities from mountain climbing to camel tours.

6. Red Sea

Red Sea

The Red Sea is teaming with marine life, which creates an amazing dive site that’s a real contender for possibly the best dive area in the world.  The turquoise waters are great for snorkellers, thanks to shallow and clear shores. We highly recommend experiencing the Cedar Pine dive site – a large submerged freighter called home by a plethora of life including octopi, manta rays, and colourful fish.

6. Castles

Jordan Castles

Jordan is famed for its range of historic castles. The favoured structures are the 11 castles that make up the desert castle loop, a tour of many grand palaces in the sparse Jordanian desert.
