10 Perfect Winter Sun Destinations

by Travelbag on 05 October 2016, 12:10PM

If there’s anything worse than a damp and rainy British summer, it’s the cold and blustery winter months that follow. Fortunately, there are so many superb winter sun holiday destinations around the world, where you can escape the cold spells for temperatures of 23°C onwards.

In this guide, we’ll give you the lowdown on some of the world’s best holiday destinations. From Mexico to the Maldives, you’re paradise beach holiday awaits you – even if it is in the middle of December!

1. Barbados, the Caribbean

Barbados

We predict that as long as the Caribbean exists, it will remain one of the world’s favourite destinations for a dream holiday. As for winter escapes, we wholeheartedly recommend a holiday to Barbados, where you can expect temperatures of between 23°C and 29°C.

Barbados’ dry season officially begins in January, but rain is practically non-existent in December, meaning you can spend Christmas and New Year’s on the island’s powder-white sands.

Sledging? No thanks, winter holidays in Barbados are often spent being pampered beyond your wildest dreams in one of the island’s many hotel spas or jet skiing on the azure Caribbean Sea.

2. Cancun, Mexico

Mexico

It may be 2°C in Canterbury, but it’s a whole different story in Cancun. Wintertime is a must for holidays to Cancun, with the region’s glorious temperatures regularly hitting 28°C.

Water sports, volleyball and scuba diving are just some of the many fun-filled pursuits available to you on your Cancun break, and while your friends and family shiver back home, you’ll be able to sit back with a cocktail in one of the resort’s many beach bars.

Swap the mulled wine for a piña colada and let the good times roll.

3. The Maldives

Maldives

Luxury takes on a whole new meaning on Maldives holidays. These spectacular islands in the Indian Ocean have long attracted winter sun-seekers, with the promise of glamorous hotels, opulent spas and an average temperature of 27°C.

Wondering when to visit the Maldives? We recommend spending Christmas in the UK and waiting for the tail end of winter in January and February, when the islands’ average rainfall is at its lowest.

4. Jamaica, the Caribbean

Jamaica

There’s a reason why Jamaica remains one of the world’s most sought after holiday destinations; the magnificent Caribbean island is a picture-perfect paradise that’s rivalled by few.

If you’re looking for an exotic getaway, winter is the time to visit. December to April is considered peak season for Jamaica holidays, with hurricane season occurring in September.

If you're planning a winter break in Jamaica, we recommend a visit to the amazing Dunn’s River Falls, a lazy day on the white sands of Seven Mile Beach in Negril and an afternoon the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, where you’ll learn all about one of the island’s biggest icons.

5. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai

Hoping to escape a season of snow, ice and freezing cold weather? The Middle East enjoys year-round sunshine and temperatures that often hit the high 20s and early 30s.

If you’re considering a Dubai holiday, you’ll be pleased to know that the iconic UAE city is no exception to the rule when it comes to hot weather. A thick coat is the last thing you’ll need during your stay here.

When you’re not topping up your tan on your private beach or opening Christmas presents by the poolside, we recommend checking out the city’s many incredible sights, including the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab and Palm Jumeirah island.

6. Phuket, Thailand

Phuket

There’s nothing else quite like a holiday to Phuket. Thailand’s largest island offers an enviable combination of culture, fine cuisine, heavenly beaches and dazzling nightlife.

Winter is the best time of year for Phuket holidays, as the weather is less humid and more manageable. December, January and February enjoy warm weather and temperatures between 24°C and 32°C.

Full moon parties, ancient temples and Thai green curry are just a few of the many reasons to escape the UK winter.

7. Sydney, Australia

Sydney

It’s a well-known fact that Australia enjoys summer during our winter. That’s right, Christmas in Sydney often spent on the beach and Christmas dinner consists of barbecued seafood.

Temperatures range between 22°C and 26°C during the month of December and continue to increase as the season progresses. Sydney holidays are your ticket away from the grey British winter, especially considering the temperature in Australia is over 15°C-19°C hotter.

8. Florida, USA

Florida

When it comes to winter sun holidays in the USA, the Sunshine State more than lives up to its name. The sun-soaked east coast enjoys average temperatures of around 17°C, which continue to climb throughout the season.

By January, you can expect temperatures to hit 22°C across Florida’s many stunning resorts, including Orlando Tampa Bay and Kissimmee. The winter months are generally a less busy time to visit Florida, meaning you won’t have to wait as long in line for the state’s best attractions, including Disney World and Universal Studios.

9. Fujairah, United Arab Emirates

Fujairah

A few hours from Dubai is the fabulous UAE city of Fujairah, where you’ll discover a more cultural and traditional side to the Middle East than its glitzy Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Fujairah is a popular choice with holidaymakers who want the best of both worlds – culture and luxury. The region also enjoys wonderful temperatures of 25°C onwards, which makes it a worthy contender for winter breaks.

10. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town

Despite its reputation for year-round sunshine, breathtaking scenery and palatial resorts, Cape Town remains one of the world’s lesser-known luxury holiday destinations.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Cape Town is during the winter months between December and February. During this time, the region enjoys its hottest temperatures with averages of 22°C and highs of 28°C.

You’ll be left awe-stricken by Cape Town and its outstanding selection of once in a lifetime experiences, from shark diving to cable car rides up the world-famous Table Mountain.
