Christmas Markets Beyond Europe: Some of our favourite far flung festive markets

When most people think of Christmas markets, they picture an endless supply of mulled wine, hot food and the snow-topped wooden cabins of Europe’s festive hotspots, including Munich and Prague. But did you know there are loads of amazing markets just waiting to be discovered beyond the continent?

We’ve collated a brilliant list of Christmas markets from around the world, so grab a hot chocolate, sit back and read through our guide to find out more about the best Christmas markets in the world.

Dubai Winter Festival, Dubai

Dubai is one of the most exciting and modern cities on the planet, with an incredible selection of iconic landmarks, luxury-laden hotels and water parks that are out of this world. You’ll find everything here, from traditional Middle Eastern souks to the Burj Khalifa - the world’s tallest building. Did you know the city is also home to the enormous Dubai Winter Festival?

The Dubai Winter Festival is bursting with Christmas fun and is perfect for if you’re planning a family holiday to Dubai. And despite being in the middle of the desert, you can still expect plenty of snow!

What’s on?

There’s never a dull moment in Dubai and the Winter Festival is certainly no exception. There’s so much to do here, meaning you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re a fan of a good old Christmas sing-along, you can’t miss the the Christmas Carol Singing show, where school and adult choirs come together for a musical extravaganza that’s sure to get you in the festive spirit.

If you’re an artsy type, or if you just fancy trying something new, you may want to have a go at gingerbread house decorating. Why not leave the cooking to the children for a change? They’ll have plenty of fun making delicious homemade pizzas - you never know, you could be raising the next Jamie Oliver!

There’s also fabulous stalls and a kids zone, where your little ones can get crafty and make new friends.

Union Square Holiday Market, New York  New York City

How does the Big Apple do Christmas? With an endless array of delicious food, unique gifts, authentic artwork and live music, that’s how!

You’ll find a range of spectacular Christmas markets in New York, which will help you to get in the festive mood. Our personal favourite is the Union Square Holiday Market, which attracts millions of people each year, with many looking to add a touch of winter sparkle to their New York holiday.

What’s on?

The Union Square Holiday Market is a craft-lover’s dream! Here, you’ll be able to choose from thousands of handmade gifts and a vast array of homemade jewellery. We guarantee your shopping bag will be filled with lots of unique and stylish presents for your loved ones back home.

If you fancy a break from shopping, why not listen to some of the fantastic live music on offer? You might even choose to escape the brisk New York winter and head inside to relax with a delicious hot chocolate or a mug of seasonal mulled wine.

Toronto Christmas Market, Canada Toronto

Travel further north of the USA to Canada and you’ll find the fabulous Toronto Christmas Market. Here you’ll be treated to a winter wonderland, with a vast selection of stalls, eateries and Christmas entertainment that’s fun for the whole family.

What’s on?

Here at Travelbag, we can’t get enough of Christmas sing-a-longs, and the Toronto Christmas Market features a wealth of live music that’s sure to get your toes a-tappin! The kids will love singing carols with Santa’s elves - in fact, you’re never far from a festive melody!

Beer-lovers will feel right at home in one of the market’s many cosy beer gardens. If you fancy swapping the beer for something even more festive, there’s plenty of warm and delicious mulled wine on offer to leave you feeling full of Christmas merriment!

Cascavelle Christmas Market, MauritiusMauritius

When you think of Christmas, the last place you probably imagine is the tropical island of Mauritius. But there’s actually a superb Christmas market held here every December. Mauritius is perfect for tourists who are looking for winter sun, without needing to sacrifice the Christmas festivities. The Cascavelle Christmas Market has been growing in popularity for some years and we think you’ll love it!

What’s on?

There’s loads on offer for kids at the Cascavelle Christmas Market, with Santa’s grotto being the go-to place for the little ones each year.

For song-lovers, there’s live music in the evenings - perfect for enjoying before watching the stunning Mauritian sunset over the sands.
