We highly recommend you venture out and go on that adventure you’ve been dying to tick off your list. We’ll tell you all the tips and tricks you need to know for your solo adventures. If you’re lacking a little bit of inspiration on where to go, we’ve handpicked destinations perfect for your solo break away.

What to know about travelling solo

Plan your day

It’s easy to over plan your trip away, so set yourself a few activities to do each day, even if that is walking to the cocktail beach bar. Jot down your vital travel information, so it’s always at hand but remember to relax.

Take a tour

Tours really are a great way of seeing the highlights of each destination but they also allow you to meet so many new people. From your tour guide to other solo travellers, it’s an easy and interesting way to make friends.

It’s cheaper than you think

‘It’s too expensive’ really is a myth. With tours companies like AAT Kings, APT and Intrepid travel all offering rooms which can be shared with fellow travellers of the same gender, you’ll get a cracking deal and avoid single supplements.

Learn the basics of the language

Learning the basics makes a great first impression and travelling solo gives you more opportunity to practice your language skills too.

You haven’t got to eat alone

Many people have the perception that you’d have to eat alone…every night; well this does not have to happen. So many eateries around the world offer communal tables and food markets, so you can sit with fellow travellers or eat on the go.

The easiest destinations to travel solo

New York

First up has to be the Big Apple. The list of places to visit in New York is simply longer than Fifth Avenue, but we’ve picked the top spots. You’ll certainly never feel lonely here, with so many museums, shops and iconic landmarks like The Statue of Liberty; you’ll meet people from all over the world. If you don’t feel comfortable getting a table for one, then there are plenty of superb food markets, so you can eat on the go. Don’t forget to go rollerblading in Central Park; it’s a great work out and rather hilarious too.

Japan

Japan is truly loved by solo travellers and we don’t blame them, the friendly and welcoming culture is ideal for those creating their very own irreplaceable memories. With activities like skiing, hiking and bird watching, you’ll be able to meet the local wildlife too! Uncover iconic temples like Kinkaku-ji and learn all about your surroundings, so you can brush up on you Japanese history. Tokyo is great for solo travellers as it is a safe and quirky place to taste mouth-watering cuisine, explore markets and of course fit in a shopping trip too.

Indonesia

Indonesia can be thought of as the perfect destination for couple and honeymoons, but it’s also superb for solo traveller! If bustling vibrant cities are not your thing, this may be the destination for you. Relaxing and taking part in yoga classes and spa days…what better way to meet new people from around the globe! Locations like Bali in Indonesia, offer markets, organic restaurants and some of the most beautiful beaches your feet have ever walked on. Not sold yet?

This destination is a ‘must’ as you can drift around Indonesia with ease as the cost of living is cheap and it’s a hot spot for scuba diving/snorkelling.

New Zealand

Hobbiton Movie Set and Waiheke Island are some of New Zealand’s incredible attractions and because you’re doing it solo, you can visit these whenever you want! When exploring unspoilt scenery like the Tongariro National Park, you really will get that sense of bliss and freedom here. Whether you want to stick to a small or large budget, New Zealand has outdoor activities like hiking and water sports, to fulfill every traveller’s wishes. The attentive but laidback Kiwis always have time for a chat, so if you’re like us you’ll be chatting for quite a while.
