South Africa: The Ultimate Foodie Getaway Guide

by Travelbag on 06 May 2016, 14:05PM

So you’ve planned where you need to go in Australia to discover spectacular cuisine but it doesn’t stop there, South Africa is the next location to add onto your foodie destinations list.

South Africa: Cape Town

South African cuisine is far from the ordinary...but for all the right reasons. Their food is mainly influenced by the indigenous population and other countries such as France and Malaysia. Many of their dishes are created to bring the communities together; an example of this is Braai/Shisa Nyama, which is where local communities gather to share food, listen to music, soak up the energetic atmosphere and eat a diverse selection of meat (commonly pork, beef and lamb). Cape Malary curry is one dish that you need taste! The curry is packed with aromatic spices like turmeric, saffron and chilli and it has remained a stable dish for centuries. If you’re a dessert lover which we certainly are, then a Malva pudding will be right up your street. It’s a baked sweet and sticky sponge that is made from fresh apricot jam and served with a hot cream sauce.

Wine tasting in the South Africa's Winelands

Winelands, South Africa

Adventures to South Africa are definitely not complete, unless you visit one of their astounding vineyards. One location that is renowned for its incredible wines and vineyards is Winelands (located in the Boland region of the West Cape in South Africa). Winelands will allow you to discover exclusive wines and if you time your break right, you can take part in the weekly wine and food festivals. One festival in Winelands that will certainly please your taste buds is the ‘Soup, sip and bread festival’ which is ideal for food and wine enthusiasts. If your schedule is tighter then Winelands offers short tours where you can delve into a range of wine and food from local vineyards.

Sky Dining- Johannesburg

Johannesburg Skyline, South Africa

Some may say dining on a table attached to an enormous crane at 100ft in the air sounds crazy, but we think it’s an opportunity you have to try...maybe not if you don’t like heights. The location of the experience moves all around downtown Johannesburg and you can find out exactly where by SMS. The marvellous experience gives you a 360 degree view of your surroundings, whilst you dine in the sky with three outstanding chefs, who will cook your gourmet dishes right in front of you. They offer breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack lifts, where you can have a variety of dishes from ‘Sesame encrusted chicken roulade filled with spinach’ to ‘Decadent fudge Picasso white chocolate mousse’.

Bientang's Cave- Hermanus

Hermanus, South Africa

Experience the freshest seafood, award winning wines, meat and vegetarian dishes, some of the best land based whale watching in the world...and it’s all in a cave! Yes this restaurant really is in a cave, in Hermanu right on the remarkable southern coast. The location gives it a rustic charm and ambiance. It’s clear by the high quality produce and presentation, that the family restaurant has truly earned its endless list of awards. ‘Fried Calamari Tender flash fried calamari strips served with chunky tartar sauce’...sounds delicious and the lists of mouth water deserts sound just as good!
