California is our next location of choice in our Ultimate Foodie Getaway series. Prepare your tastebuds for our insight on where you need to go to taste some of the most flavorsome and delicious food in the Golden State, near iconic cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

So, what's the big deal about Californian cuisine? For starters, it's low in saturated fats, incorporates fresh organic produce, and is high in vegetables and lean meats, as the Californian lifestyle is very health-conscious. Seafood is a staple in the cuisine and is sourced mainly from the North Coast and Central Coast region. Their health-conscious lifestyle evidently shows through dishes such as Shrimp and Crab Louie, which is a palatable salad with either shrimp or crab and the salad is tossed with Louie dressing, served in San Francisco since the early 1900’s...so it must be good. The Californian food and drink festivals are an excellent way to try an array of cuisine all in one location; these are held monthly all over the US state. You can taste local produce at the Farmer’s Markets and we recommend the Davis Farmers’ Market, as you can have a picnic in the heart of California’s rich agricultural history. There are multiple food, beer and wine festivals that are the perfect way to socialize and enjoy new beverages and cuisine. Here's where you should go...

Old Place - Agoura Hills, near Malibu

Malibu Creek State Park, California

If you’re a meat lover then this is definitely one place to highlight on your list and what better way to taste the classic Californian flavours than in a rustic Road House? This Steak house is the smallest one you’ve ever been to but you couldn’t have witnessed one with as much character and personality before, the size gives the road house a real attentive feel so it definitely works in their favour. Oak-grilled organic white sage chicken with squash, carrots and asparagus is one combination that tastes as good as it sounds...and that does sounds delicious to us. The antique bar is the perfect place to meet and socialize with local Californians. Also the bonus about this road house is they have a winery and tasting room right next door!

Farm - Sonoma Hwy, Napa

Californian coast line

Farm is elegant and simplistic still with a real lovely charm and nature...and fine dining is definitely their forte. They have indoor seating with an outdoor patio where you can admire the glorious Napa Valley views whilst drinking regional wines and tasting dishes like ‘Aquerello Risotto’ which local spring vegetables, lemon preserve and black truffles. The presentation of the food is divine; every dish is articulately finished and is almost too beautiful to eat. Also don’t forget to try the Meyer Lemon Pudding Cake whilst you’re there!

Ichido - San Francisco

San Francisco, California

The extraordinary combination of Japanese seafood and Californian cuisine is an unusual mix, but works incredibly well! Ichido is distinct in comparison to other restaurants in San Francisco, due to its quality and originality. Their menu changes daily as they base it on what the ocean provides them with, so every evening has an element of surprise. Unique cuts of meats sourced from local butchers are incorporated into dishes and they try to ensure all their produce is as locally sourced as possible. Whether you’re dining with your family or friends, you are sure to have a great night sharing stories and socialising with fellow dinners at the shared table.
