The A to Z of places you need to see

by Travelbag on 17 June 2016, 15:06PM

Holidays and bucket lists go hand in hand. Whether your list features countries, cities or specific landmarks, it's always good to have a list of places you'd love to visit. But what if you don't know where to go? We've drawn up a list of worldwide holiday destinations for you to tick off – and we've helpfully put them in alphabetical order. Maybe you can sit there smugly as you've been to some of them already, or maybe you'll be inspired by somewhere you've never considered. Get ready to start planning your next trip as you work your way down our A-Z list of the best holiday destinations.

Often overlooked in favour of Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide is a cultural gem. It's particularly hot on the festival scene, with year-round events like The Adelaide Film Festival and The Adelaide Art Festival.

Buenos Aires

Argentina's beachfront capital is beautiful by day, and comes alive after dark. The amazing nightlife, varied architecture and European-meets-Latin vibe combine to make Buenos Aires a must-see.

Cape Town

The most famous city in South Africa has great surfing, jaw-dropping scenery and loads of restaurants. And you'll be just a stone's throw away from vineyards and safari parks. A well-rounded holiday location.

The City of Superlatives has so many record-breaking landmarks – it's one of those places that you just have to see to believe. The desert sun means you can visit Dubai any time of the year, and it has a surprising amount of things to do for families

Etosha National Park

This massive African game reserve in Namibia is a brilliant place to go on a safari in search of the elusive ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo.

Made up of 333 islands, Fiji has a huge variety of activities, wildlife, and hotels. With only 33% of the islands inhabited, you’ll be sure to find yourself some space – and some of the best snorkelling in the world.

On the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, Galle is a wonderful mix of Asian and European influences, with amazing architecture. The most famous landmark is the 36-acre Galle Fort, which has stood since 1584.

Hong Kong

It's easy to see why this place was been The Telegraph's number one tourist destination for six years straight. Known as the 'Gateway to China', Hong Kong is a mixture of rural and urban, where skyscrapers and swanky hotels are surrounded by rolling mountains. You'll feel like you're on a movie set.

Home to one of the longest caves in Malaysia, Ipoh is unsurprisingly popular with spelunkers, aka cave explorers. The city is also a favourite for backpackers as a stop over between Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

The home of Reggae, this chilled back island is a great spot for sitting on a beach, cocktail in hand. Jamaica is surrounded by coral reefs too, so the snorkelling is pretty special.

The capital of Nepal is truly unique. Perched in the valley of the Himalayas, this colourful city is surrounded by dramatic mountains. It's a great choice if you want to combine culture with the great outdoors.

If you're going to Peru, you're probably going because of Machu Picchu. But, when you land in the capital, don't rush off into the countryside straight away. Lima is well worth spending a few days in, when you can discover its fascinating museums, decorative buildings and incredible restaurants.

Full of colours, spices and ornate architecture, the 'Red City' is a must-see. And the food is mouth-wateringly good. You can pop over for a few days on a city break, or incorporate it into a longer holiday to Morocco.

New York

Of course the Big Apple was going to be on here. How could you not want to see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Central Park? We suggest going in December to experience New York at its very best.

An obscure one, but a good one. Oranjestad is the multi-coloured capital of Arbua. Filled with Dutch-influenced buildings, this city is right on the coast – so you can spend your mornings sightseeing, and your afternoons on the beach. Sounds like the perfect Caribbean combination.

Petra is undoubtedly one of the most impressive ancient sights in the world. Jordan's 'Lost City' has stood the test of time, having lasted since the 6th century BC.

British Columbia is probably Canda's most popular state for holidays. But Quebec should also be on your list. The largest Canadian state is home to massive lakes, photogenic snow-capped mountains, and stunning fjords.

Quebec City

Rio de Janeiro

There's nowhere like Rio de Janeiro. Built in the shadow of the colossal 30-metre Christ the Redeemer statue, Brazil's capital has it all – sandy beaches, colourful neighbourhoods and wild parties. Visit during carnival season to see Rio at its liveliest.

This stunning archipelago in the Indian Ocean should be on everyone's list. Whether you're planning your honeymoon, or simply want a romantic getaway, the Seychelles tick all the boxes. Expect pristine sands, turquoise waters and brilliant snorkelling.

Japan's bustling capital is home to nine million people, and you may want to join them once you've visited. Tokyo is a sprawling melting pot of old and new, where time-stamped temples rub shoulders with state-of-the-art skyscrapers.

This small town is tucked away in Bali. You can enjoy iconic views of Indonesia across the step-like rice paddie fields. Plus, the surrounding area is teaming with temples, shrines and wildlife.

Victoria Falls

Who doesn't want to see the world’s greatest waterfall? Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls churns out more water than any other waterfall on Earth, with 550 million liters of water pouring down every minute.

West Nusa Tenggara

This Indonesian province includes popular Lombok and Sumbawa. It's an island filled with hot, frothing springs and traditional villages, all surrounded by ribbons of white sand and bright blue waters.

West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

We cheated on this one. Known as 'Amoy' in English, Xiamen is a historic city just across the South China Sea from Taiwan. It's slowly emerging as the most sophisticated city in China

Yellowstone National park

Yellowstone was the first national park to open in the USA, and it's easy to understand why they wanted to protect this amazing landscape. The reserve has amazing views and is a nature-watching paradise.

This archipelago off the coast of Tanzania has amazing virgin beaches and topaz-blue seas. The wildlife is great too – keep a look out for monkeys, sea turtles and more.
