How to spend 3 days in Sydney

by Travelbag on 25 August 2016, 12:08PM

Exciting, cosmopolitan and breathtakingly beautiful, Sydney is the perfect location for an action-packed stay in Australia. When it comes to dream holiday destinations, the New South Wales capital is up there with the best of them.

We recently sent a group of Travelbag travel experts to Sydney, so for our latest “72 hours” travel guide we quizzed them to give you the inside scoop on Sydney’s best tourist attractions, eating places, beaches and nightlife spots. There really is something for everyone in this outstanding city.

With so much to see and do in Sydney, you’ll have your work cut out for you trying to fit it all in. But follow our detailed itinerary and you won’t go far wrong.

Day 1

Take a tour of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks

Sydney's iconic landmarks

After landing safely at Sydney Airport, the first thing on your mind will be to get out and explore.

The obvious place to start is The Sydney Harbour – home to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. A visit here is one of the major highlights of any Sydney holiday, so it’s worth ticking it off first.

Aside from the beautiful views of Port Jackson, the Sydney Harbour is also home to a wealth of fun activities and eating spots. Feeling peckish? The Sydney Cove Oyster Bar is legendary in these parts.

Continue your tour with a trip to the nearby Sydney Tower, which measures an incredible 305 metres in height, making it the second tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere. Take the lift to the top for 360-degree panoramic views.

Coffee and culture at The Rocks

If all that sightseeing has got you a little bit exhausted, make the short journey to The Rocks. This spectacular historic quarter is home to some of the city’s oldest pubs and offers a fine selection of cafés and eating-places.

We personally love Apetito, a chic little restaurant that specialises in traditional Italian food. Opt for an espresso to keep you perky or relax with a glass of wine in the sun.

Once you’ve recharged your batteries, head out and explore the rest of this fantastic complex, which includes art galleries, Aboriginal museums, souvenir shops and more.

Dinner and a night out in Newtown

When night falls, Newtown is the place to be. Located just a stone’s throw from the city’s main business district, this buzzy area is home to an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and music venues.

With such a wide selection of cuisines on offer, Newtown is the perfect dinner spot. From Thai food to traditional Australian grub, there’s something to suit every palate here.

Day 2

Sydney beaches

Life’s a beach

It’s hard to decipher between the best beaches in Sydney, mainly because they’re all outstanding. Paradise can be found along Sydney’s picturesque coastline, where warm white sands give way to clear turquoise waters.

Water sports and surfing are readily available at all of Sydney’s top beaches -what else would you expect from a nation of surfers?

So, which one should you visit? Bondi Beach is undoubtedly the most famous of Sydney’s beaches. The beach itself is a kilometre long and attracts millions of visitors each year.

Top tip: If you’re planning a trip to Bondi Beach, you cannot leave without getting an ice cream from Gelato Messina. Bangkok Bites is also a firm favourite for authentic Thai street food!

If you’d rather avoid the main tourist spot, take the short 30-minute ferry ride to Manly from the Darling Harbour. The beach is situated in Northern Sydney and is well worth the visit for more fun and frolics in the sun.

Get some friends or family members together for a barbecue party

“Throw another shrimp on the barbie,” it’s that age-old Australian cliché that never gets old (unless you’re Australian that is).

For the ultimate Sydney experience, take advantage of one of the city’s free barbecue zones.

There’s no need to eat out, just head to the nearest supermarket, stock up on a few supplies and find an unreserved grill.

We especially recommend doing this in the summer (their summer, not ours), which lasts from December through to August. It’s when the weather in Sydney is at its hottest, when temperatures regularly reach the high 20s (°C).

Day 3

 Taronga Zoo, Sydney

Once in a lifetime experiences in Sydney

Your last day in Sydney, you’ve got to make it a special one! Which is why we recommend a day of fun exploring the city’s best parks, activity centres and experiences.

Kick things off in Sydney Harbour with the amazing BridgeClimb Sydney experience. That’s right, you can actually climb to the top of Sydney Bridge for an awe-inspiring view that will stay with you forever.

If you’re not keen on heights, head out on a maiden voyage on one of the many whale watching boat tours that operate around the harbour.

These wonders of the marine world can be regularly seen in Sydney’s waters. Humpback whales and killer whales have been known to put on a show for lucky holidaymakers.

Taronga Zoo and the Luna Park

Back on land, a fantastic selection of activities awaits you. Head to the spectacular Taronga Zoo for a day to remember! The park is home to over 4,000 animals of 300 species, including giraffes, elephants, tigers and rhinos.

To experience all the fun of the fair, pay a visit to the Luna Park Sydney! Situated on the northern side of the Sydney Harbour, the long-serving amusement park boasts a thrilling selection of rides for the whole family.

Spend your last evening in Sydney at the Darling Harbour

It’s always sad when Sydney holidays come to an end. We’ve no doubt you’ll have had the time of your life, so it’s time to top it off with something special.

Spend your last evening in the fantastic Darling Harbour for a night to remember. During day, the area is home to a number of brilliant activity centres, like SEA LIFE Sydney and the 9D Action Cinemas complex.

The harbour really comes alive when the sun goes down. Here you’ll find a stunning selection of bars and restaurants, as well as cool nightclubs and lounges. But that’s not the best part.

Every weekend, Darling Harbour puts on an epic firework display. Why? It’s simply Sydney’s way of celebrating the weekend!
