New York is a city that’s bustling with excitement. From iconic sights and trendy boutiques to lavish department stores and famed eateries, it’s one mighty city!

New York City

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to New York’s amazing landmarks: Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building… the list goes on and on. But that’s not all there is.

There’s also plenty to see and do for keen culture vultures too, including the world’s most famous art galleries and museums.

We’ve listed our five favourite cultural attractions to help you prepare for your 2016 or 2017 holiday to New York.

1. Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The Museum of Modern Art is a must for anyone planning a trip to New York.

NYC’s answer to the Tate Modern features almost 200,000 artworks from over 10,000 internationally recognised artists, from bronze sculptures to stunning oil paintings.

The MoMA’s exhibitions are always changing, so it’s always worth taking a look even if you’ve been lucky enough go on holiday to New York before.

Where is the Museum of Modern Art?

The MoMA is situated in the heart of New York in Manhattan, just a few blocks from Times Square.

2. American Museum of Natural History

Occupying a prime location next to Central Park (a day out in itself) the spectacular American Museum of Natural History is the cream of the crop when it comes to New York’s best attractions.

Nature and animal lovers will not want to miss this outstanding museum, which boasts 45 magnificent exhibition halls.

Among these exhibitions are 32 million specimens of plants, human artifacts, fossils and more, making the AMNH one of the world’s biggest museums.

Where is the American Museum of Modern Art?

The AMNH is situated on the Upper West Side of Manhattan next to Central Park.

3. The Met Cloisters

Holidays to New York are not complete without a visit to The Met Cloisters – a permanent exhibition of art and architecture from medieval Europe.

The collection features remnants from the Roman and Gothic era, as well as beautiful landscaped gardens where you can sit and enjoy a coffee.

The Met Cloisters are a world apart from NYC’s busy walkways and crowded areas, making it the perfect retreat if you need to escape the hustle and bustle for a bit.

Where are The Met Cloisters?

The Met Cloisters lie within the scenic surrounds of Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan. Public transport, including buses, regularly runs to the park.

4. The Metropolitan Museum of Art

If you’ve only got time to visit one of the many museums in New York, we recommend the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Founded in 1870, “the Met” boasts an awe-inspiring collection of artwork and remains the largest art museum in the USA.

Sculptural works and iconic paintings are among the Met’s ancient collection of artworks, from Ancient Greek statues to Vincent van Gogh paintings.

Where is The Metropolitan Museum of Art?

The Met is located next to Central Park, on Manhattan’s 5th Avenue. If you’ve got time, take a horse and carriage ride through Central Park after your visit.

5. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum

On September 11th 2001, the world witnessed the worst terror attack in history.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a tribute to the 2,977 people who lost their lives during the attacks, as well as the six people that died as a result of the 1993 bombing.

If you’re planning on visiting New York in 2016 or 2017, we highly recommend a visit to this touching memorial.
