Top 10 things to do in Thailand – Part Two

by Travelbag on 19 November 2015, 09:11AM

If you’re going to be going on holiday to Thailand then this guide will help you plan an unforgettable trip. In part 1 [link to blog] we recommended that you visit the Grand Palace, the Golden Triangle and one or two national parks during your stay. In part 2 we’ve got even more great suggestions.

Historical ruins

The Phanom Rung Historical Park is home to the ancient Khmer ruins which date from the 12th century. You’ll definitely want to take a photo or two of the grand entrance and because it’s positioned on a steep hill the views of the paddy fields below are great. Many visitors recommend visiting in the late afternoon as it’s less busy and the shadows cast as the sun goes down makes everything look more magical.

Elephant trekking

No trip to Thailand would be complete without an elephant trek. We recommend you visit the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre or the Chiang Dao Elephant Camp as they care about their elephants and treat them well.  At the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre you can see the elephants going for a bath, visit the elephant hospital and see the elephant calves. It’s a wonderful place to visit and you’ll thoroughly enjoy your two hours on top of an elephant.

Island hopping

Rather than exploring the islands on a tourist boat or passenger ferry go island hopping on a long-tail boat instead. Island hopping is a great way of spending a day of your holiday as there are so many beautiful places to visit. Why not go snorkelling or kayaking on the island of Ko Phi Phi Lee in the Andaman Sea?

If you visit Koh Lanta and want to explore make sure you hire a car rather than a scooter as the island has many unpaved side roads and steep hills which make using a scooter difficult. Lanta Old Town and Long Beach are great places to spend an afternoon as they have some wonderful restaurants and aren’t as busy as other places.

Tiger Kingdom

If you love big cats and have always wanted to get up close and personal with them then a trip to Tiger Kingdom will blow your mind. This tiger centre is located in Mae Rim which is a half an hour car ride from the centre of Chiang Mai. You’ll have the opportunity to stroke and play with tiger cubs and adult tigers who have been hand raised and watch them being fed by their keepers.

Chatuchak market

There are plenty of places to shop in Thailand and you’ll be able to pick up plenty of bargains. If you’re staying in Bangkok make sure you check out the Chatuchak market which has an incredible 8000 stalls and is the largest market in Thailand. It sells everything you could possibly want: clothes, accessories, ornaments, furniture… you’ll be spoilt for choice if you shop for souvenirs here.

You might also want to visit the Asiatique Night Market which is held on the riverside every night from 4pm till midnight.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

As well as visiting the Chatuchak market and Asiatique Night Market you should also visit a floating market as they are very vibrant and you can take some great pictures. They are popular with tourists so try and visit as early as you can to avoid the crowds.

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is well worth a trip. It’s situated an hour and a half drive from Bangkok and you can take a boat tour to see the market, souvenir stalls and coconut processing plant. There is some wonderful food to sample, the coconut pancakes are delicious!

Visit a village

If you can, try to visit the villages in Northern Thailand where the Akha, Hmong or Lisu hill tribes live. For a relatively small amount of money you can stay a night or two with a family and find out what life is like for them. You’ll be fascinated by their history and traditions.
