How to have an unforgettable time in Sri Lanka

by Travelbag on 20 November 2015, 12:11PM

If you’re planning on going on holiday to Sri Lanka and want to make the most of your trip, then this is the blog for you!
Any holiday to Sri Lanka is bound to be special because it’s such a lovely country to visit, but if you want to have a holiday that you’ll never forget (for all the right reasons) there are some things we can recommend:

Intro1

Choose the right time of year to visit

Sri Lanka might be a small country but it’s affected by two monsoons a year which is something you need to consider before you book your trip. The two monsoons affect different parts of the country which means that pretty much all year there is somewhere in Sri Lanka you can visit and still enjoy good weather.

As a general rule of thumb, the best time to visit the east coast of Sri Lanka is from April to May and for the rest of the country, December to March is the best time. Temperatures remain pretty constant all year round and you can expect coastal areas to have temperatures of around 26–30°C in the day. Humidity typically ranges from 60% - 90%, with the south-west and the mountainous regions having the highest humidity.

Book the right resort

If you want to have an unforgettable holiday, then why not treat yourself to a luxury 4 or 5 star resort. Click here to see our latest Sri Lanka package deals

If you want to stay on the southern coastline then The Fortress Resort & Spa, Koggala could be the perfect place to create lasting memories. It’s an award winning, 5 star boutique hotel and is ideal if you want to be pampered. Its offers three restaurants – Pepper, Heat and DUO but if you prefer to dine in your room or in another location this can be easily arranged.

All rooms at this hotel have 7ft by 7ft super king beds, world class entertainment systems and either a balcony or private courtyard. You’ll feel like a movie star if you stay here!

Alternatively, you could choose to stay in the luxury 5 star resort of Calamansi Cove by Jetwing which is situation near Balapitiya on the south west coast. You can stay in one of twelve stylish, contemporary villas with your own personal butler on hand at all times. You’ll be able to watch the sun go down each night from your private roof terrace, what could be better? This resort has a stunning infinity pool, wonderful restaurant and two great bars.

Experience the culture

If you can, you should spend at least one day of your holiday learning about Sri Lanka’s fascinating history and culture. Why not visit a traditional fishing village and enjoy a meal that the local people have prepared? You could take a trip to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress which was built in the fifth century and explore its caves and palaces. We highly recommend you visit Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka at some point and if you have time, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.

Sri Lanka is a country which boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage sites and you really should try and see as many as you can during your holiday. They are:

• Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
• Ancient City of Sigiriya
• Dambulla Cave Temple
• The Galle Fort
• Sacred City of Anuradhapura
• Sacred City of Kandy
• Sinharaja Forest Reserve
• The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka

Choose the right beach

If you want to go snorkelling and diving, then head to the beaches on the south west coast. They are the beaches most popular with tourists so can be busy at time but you won’t mind as you get up close and personal with the coral reefs. If you do end up wanting somewhere quieter where you can just relax and read a good book, then head to the beaches on the east coast as they’re much quieter.

Whatever you choose to do during your holiday we hope you have a wonderful time and create some wonderful memories you’ll treasure forever.
