Intro2

Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to spend a week or two, so if you holiday here you’re bound to have a great time. This is the second part of our guide to the best places to visit during your holiday to Sri Lanka. In part one we covered off Kandy, Colombo, Sigiriya, Mirissa, Rekawa and Yala National Park. In part two, we have even more great suggestions for you…

Galle

You simply must visit the city of Galle. You’ll want to see Galle Fort and spend time in the New Town. You’ll really enjoy strolling around the city, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the old buildings, churches and mosques.
When you visit Galle Fort, you can walk on top of the walls, admire the views and watch newlyweds pose for photographs. At the southern end, you can see Flag Rock which is the best place to see the sun go down and you can also see a beautiful lighthouse. There are plenty of museums to check out and the Galle International Cricket Stadium too, if you’re a cricket fan.

Intro1

Uda Walawe National Park

If you want to get up close and personal with elephants, then the Uda Walawe National Park is a good place to visit. Why not take an open-top safari and see how many elephants you can spot? It’s home to four hundred – and there are even more at the nearby Elephant Transit Home.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation rescues orphan elephants and looks after them at the Elephant Transit Home until they are ready to be released back into the wild. If you want to see first-hand the good work they do you can, we recommend visiting at feeding time!

Intro3

Knuckles Mountain Range

If you enjoy hiking or mountain biking, then you should head to the Knuckles Mountain Range in central Sri Lanka. There are lots of trails to try, taking you through forests, alongside rivers, paddy fields and waterfalls. It really is beautiful and the whole area is now a conservation area. You might also want to go for a hike around Haputale or Nuwara Eliya.

Intro4

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is the capital city of the North Central Province and is a great place to spend a day or two of your holiday. It’s a place full of history and you can see monuments and ruins from former palaces, temples and monasteries. There is so much to see that you’ll struggle to do it by foot so why not travel around on a tuk tuk?

If you enjoy museums, then two of the best are The Folk Museum and the Archaeological Museum. You’ll learn so much about the history of Sri Lanka if you visit either of these museums and they are the perfect place to visit when the weather isn’t great.

Popular places to visit in Anuradhapura include the Bodhi Tree Temple, Ruwanwelisaya and Lovamahapaya. If you want to shop, then head to the New Town where you’ll find shops and market stalls. There are lots of monkeys in Anuradhapura who will steal your camera and other belongings if you’re not careful so be on your guard!
