Music Festivals in the United States

by Travelbag on 28 May 2015, 10:05AM

The best music festivals in the USA are household names the world over: South By Southwest, Coachella, Sasquatch!, Burning Man, Bonnaroo, Warped Tour and Lollapalooza to name but a few. Yet while you may have heard of them, do you know which of them is right for you?

Intro1

Newport Folk Festival is an American institution that today has come to reach out to and include artists that would have once fallen outside of the original definitions of its name. Head to Rhode Island in late July to indulge in this globally renowned festival.

South By Southwest, or SXSW, is a mecca for new and emerging talent, and draws in not only the best and freshest acts from around the world but also plenty of music industry professionals desperate to find the next big thing. As such, there are countless breakthrough performances to uncover and exciting unknowns to stumbleupon. It takes place every March in Austin, Texas.

Coachella, Sasquatch!, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza are all more standard festival experiences, albeit all boasting their own fun quirks and exceptional annual line-ups and headliners. Coachella takes place in the Californian desert every April and has come to pride itself on snagging rare appearances by reforming acts or lesser-spotted artists to top their bill in recent years. Sasquatch! takes place every May in George, Washington, with a main stage built upon the end of a cavernous gorge; a dramatic setting for a diverse festival that brings together the sharpest rock, rap and pop to cater for their wide range of attendees.

Intro2

Bonaroo takes place in Manchester, Tennessee in June and always comes complete with a great atmosphere and festival culture that inspires attendees to dress up, go weird and ramp up the buzz and energy at the stages and in the campsites. All-nighters and marathon partying is the order of the day. On the other end of the scale, Lollapalooza are perhaps the slickest operators of the big, all-rounder festivals, and never fail to disappoint with their line-ups or organisation every summer in Chicago.

Burning Man is a unique, week-long proposition, based in the Nevada desert, that could be considered to be more of a temporary city of counter-cultural ideas and art rather than just a music festival. Every year, it begins on the last Monday in August and wraps up on the first Monday in September.

The Warped Tour remains the flagship rock, punk and metal festival, and tours the USA between June and August, taking in a huge number of towns and cities. Yet for a truly eclectic festival that features a range of artists that aren’t easy to place into a single category, head for Beale Street in early May in Memphis, Tennessee.
