48 Hours in Atlantic City

by Travelbag on 23 March 2015, 11:03AM

The east coast’s answer to Las Vegas, Atlantic City has grown from a seaside getaway from the near cities of Philadelphia and New York to an indulgent destination complete with casinos and expensive hotels. It is the iconic boardwalk that draws the attention of most and it was the completion of this in 1870 that put Atlantic City on the map. Now, the New Jersey location welcomes thousands of tourists each year. Many only come for a few days, so let’s see what can be done with a 48-hour turnaround in Atlantic City.

Day One

9am – Onto the boardwalk

So named because of the man who came up with the idea – Alexander Boardman – to stop hotel lobbies being filled with sand, the four-mile boardwalk is almost always what people think of when Atlantic City is mentioned. One side you get the waves of the Atlantic while at the other you can choose from shopping, gambling and packed piers. The perfect way to start the day.

Intro1

11am – Get a bird’s eye view

Take the opportunity to get a great view of the Atlantic City skyline by heading up the 228 steps of the Absecon Lighthouse. The tallest in all of New Jersey, you can get a full 360-degree view before exploring what the building, built in 1857, used to look like by taking a tour around the museum that shows how it looked in 1925.

1pm – Hit the beach

As you’ve only just arrived, you can spend most of the afternoon on the beach. While you might not always think of this place as being one for spending time in swimwear, the wide sandy beach coupled with the refreshing ocean breeze makes for an enticing way to spend the afternoon. There are water sports on offer too for anyone eager for an adrenaline rush.

Intro2

6pm – Live like Boardwalk Empire

The hit television series is based on the resort town and it has had a number of ups and downs since the Prohibition-era. Enoch “Nucky” Johnson called the ninth floor of the then Ritz-Carlton Hotel his home and you can enjoy a trip down memory lane and the century old Knife and Fork Inn or the Irish Pub at St. James Place that is filled with mementos.

9pm – Roll the dice and hit the town

With 12 themed casinos dotted around the place, Atlantic City is the place to try your luck at being a high roller. From Wild West themes to elegant, dressier locations, you can choose from the options as you head out for a night on the tiles. Once you have won big then you can spend your winnings on a performance at the Boardwalk Hall or dance the night away at the retro club classic of Boogie Nights.

Intro3

Day Two

9am – Dolphin watching

Get rid of the cobwebs by zipping off into the ocean to spot dolphins. The voyages last around two hours and you have a great chance of seeing these glorious mammals.

Intro4

12pm – Oysters

It’s lunchtime and this is the perfect excuse to try the locally caught oysters. The Dock’s Oyster House, that has been running since 1897, is the place to go with around a dozen variations on this seafood classic available. Cape May Salts are a local classic, the chowders are incredibly popular and the lobster divine.

2pm – Steel Pier

This is the classic amusement pier in Atlantic City, a place that has been a huge part of the city’s history. From the controversial diving horse stunt to some of the biggest stars of the 20th century, it was a place for thrills and spills. A fire rampaged through it in the 70s and now it is an amusement park awaiting the green light from developers for a new look.

5pm – Saltwater Taffy

A candy that was made by accident in the 1880s has become confectionary synonymous with Atlantic City. Find out how it is made as you tour the 1920s James’ Candy factory before you enjoy samples to see for yourself just how good it tastes.

Intro5

7pm – Go shopping

Treat yourself to a little TLC by heading into the fashionable outlets that are found in the city. The number of stores is into the triple digits range and the nine blocks of pure shopping indulgence can get you amazing discounts from brands like H&M, Converse and Banana Republic. Alternatively, go to the shops at Caesers to splurge in a designer mall.

9pm – Have a laugh at the Comedy Club

After another busy day, it’s time to have a laugh. There are plenty of these to be had at Borgata. The popular casino has its own Comedy Club and there is always something going on there that is worth seeing. With big name comedians as well as up and coming performers, this is sure to hit the spot as you relax into your second evening in Atlantic City.
