Top Free Things to do in Western Australia

by Travelbag on 04 February 2015, 18:02PM

During a time when everyone is tightening their purse strings, there’s no better place to enjoy free fun, adventure and entertainment than Western Australia.

West Australia has a glorious climate, wonderful natural attractions and a relaxed and care-free vibe - so get out and enjoy the sunshine.

1) Spend a lazy afternoon in Kings Park

Kings Park, the world’s largest inner city park, is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon outdoors in Perth. There are plenty of grassy spots with breathtaking views of the city so you’ll be sure to find a quiet corner for a picnic or afternoon nap. In Spring, the Botanic Gardens come alive with colourful wildflowers, and the view of the river from the Federation Walkway is unforgettable. Free guided walking tours of the park depart from the Visitor Centre daily at 10.00 and 14.00 so visitors can discover the life that abounds in the park.  What’s more you can get there for free. In Perth city you can travel for free on the CAT (Central Area Transport) bus – a great way to see the best of the city without paying a cent!

2) Visit the dolphins at Monkey Mia

In Monkey Mia, 850 kilometres north of Perth, a small pod of dolphins regularly swim into the calm, aquamarine shallows to say G'day and snare a feed of fish. Mid-morning is the best time to meet these endearingly mischievous mammals, but you'll see them in the bay throughout the day.

3) Snorkel Ningaloo Reef

Don a snorkel and explore the emerald lagoons of Ningaloo Reef – the world’s longest fringing coral reef. Unlike the Great Barrier Reef you don’t have to take a boat to get. You can swim alongside ancient turtles, rays and colourful tropical fish by the thousands just metres from the shore.

4) Food Tasting

Hit the food and wine trail in Perth’s Swan Valley, only 25 minutes drive from Perth city or around Margaret River, 4 hours drive south. You can sample sumptuous fare like cheese, olives and venison and then indulge your sweet tooth with heavenly chocolate and fudge made locally from fresh local ingredients. The wineries offer sweeping vistas, lakes, towering forests and surf breaks, as well as free tastings of award winning wines. Cellar door staff are friendly and knowledgeable and you can often get a free wine tasting lesson as you sample a drop or two. All of this without even opening your wallet! That is unless you taste something you can’t go home without.

5) Visit Australia’s whitest beach

Esperance also proudly holds the title of Australia’s whitest beach with Lucky Bay successfully overcoming a bid from Whitehaven on Whitsunday Island in Queensland to retain the prestigious title.Get up close to kangaroos who come here to sunbathe on the unimaginably white sand, before cooling off in the aquamarine water.

6) Sunsets in the West

The amazing beauty of a sunset over the water is not to be missed. Locals and tourists alike will pause and watch as the sun goes down in brilliant array of colour over the ocean. Cottesloe beach in Perth or Cable Beach in Broome are both perfect spots to sit with fish and chips, or at the hotel with a cold beverage in hand while the sun melts into the ocean. Whichever way you choose to relax on a lazy afternoon, you’re sure to be impressed by the sunsets in the west.

7) Go Land Based Whale and Dolphin Watching

(June to December) Visit beaches and coastal viewing platforms to witness migrating humpback, southern right and blue whales. Look out for cheeky dolphins playing in the bays year round. Top vantage points or places to book a whale watching cruise are in Albany, Broome, Exmouth, Hillarys, Denham, Kalbarri and Geographe Bay.

8) Rock Art

Peruse some of the world's oldest art galleries dating back tens of thousands of years in Australia’s North West. The petroglyph rock engravings of the Burrup Peninsula and spectacular Kimberley Wandjina images are mind-blowing.

9) Staircase to the Moon

This natural phenomenon is created when a full moon reflects off the mudflats at Roebuck Bay during the low tides of March to October. It's a natural spectacle not to be missed. Follow the locals and take a picnic and a towel to the beach to watch it.

10) Explore the port city of Fremantle

Located 20 minutes drive from Perth city, Fremantle boasts the best preserved example of a 19th century port streetscape in the world. Spend the day exploring the world-famous heritage buildings and fascinating maritime and convict history. The bustling markets are an essential stop to browse through great value-for-money crafts, clothes, jewellery and food – as well as enjoying some of the free entertainment provided by the local street performers.

11) Kalgoorlie Walking Trail

Immerse yourself in Kalgoorlie's romantic gold mining history on a fascinating walk trail that explores over 40 historic buildings and old miner's pubs, many virtually unchanged from the heady gold rush days.

12) Brush up on your cultural knowledge in Perth

Right in the heart of the city you’ll find the Cultural Centre, home to Perth’s art gallery, museum, state library and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). This hub of Northbridge is the perfect place to spend the day awakening your cultural senses. All venues are just a gold coin donation entry so head to the State Library to find information on your ancestors, or browse through the endless gift ideas at the art gallery gift shop. Exhibitions at these centres change frequently, so you can visit as many times as you like.
