New York City Guide: How to spend 48 Hours in NYC

by Travelbag on 16 February 2015, 13:02PM

It’s the city that never sleeps, the place with the most iconic skyline in the world and the setting for some of the best sitcoms that will ever be written. New York has long been an incredible holiday location that is ideal for a mini-break. A buzzing, busy city, the must-see list is mind-boggling for a first-time visitor.

Still, there are plenty of people who use the city as a layover option, and there are plenty of ways to fit in the major attractions for an epic 48 hours. So let’s take a look at an extravagant itinerary to have a superb couple of days in the Big Apple.

intro7

Day One

9am – Head to the Statue Liberty. A gift from France in 1886, this colossal sculpture is found on Liberty Island at the harbour. It is known as a universal symbol of democracy and freedom and is one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. For more than a decade now, the National Park Service has implemented a reservation system and this is strongly recommended for anyone looking to enter the museum, pedestal or crown. Ferry tickets should also be bought ahead of time while the Ellis Island Immigration Museum is an interesting spot if you have enough time.

intro6

12pm – Up the Empire State Building. For an unrivalled view of New York City, the Empire State Building with its stately deco architecture is your best bet. The tallest structure in the city, you head up all of 86 floors to find an observation deck with a breath-taking panoramic of one of the most famous cities on the planet. Expect to queue – unless you head there extra early – but it is worth it for the photo opportunities at the top.

intro5

4pm – Ground Zero. One of the most harrowing moments of modern time was the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York. A respectful and emotional memorial, most visitors find the whole thing very moving and it combines a beautiful message with an insightful look into what happened that day. The museum is also very powerful with artefacts from the former towers amongst other things.

intro4

8pm – Broadway. Take your pick from 40 professional theatres to enjoy some of the greatest shows on earth at Broadway. A popular tourist attraction, it is the highest level of theatre and sold more than $1.3 billion worth of tickets in 2014. Found in Manhattan, it is easily accessible and you can choose from musicals or plays with the likes of The Lion King, Wicked and Les Miserables popular favourites along the strip. With he best performers doing the best plays, Broadway is a real treat for all the family. Located right in Times Square, you can tick that box off too by seeing it in all its evening glory.

Day Two

9am – Walk around Central Park. Give yourself a gentle introduction to the second day with a stroll around the concrete jungle’s most famous natural gem. With 843 acres, it is filled with hidden gems and wonderful views so it is best to rent a bicycle for a couple of hours. You can head down any time after 6am to get them for a solo/family ride or enjoy a tour with the aptly named Central Park Bike Tours at 9am to see the beauty of this tourist – and local – hotspot.

intro2

1pm – Grand Central Terminal. An amazing building that offers stunning architecture and is well worth a few snaps with the camera. It is a classic tourist location, plus with so many people going about their daily business it is ideal for people watching. Found at 42nd Street and Park Avenue it is an historic landmark that is bustling with modern life. We’ve all seen it in the movies and the concourse view is spectacular but there are also some other treasures. The Whispering Gallery is perfect for secrets while at the Oyster Bar you can hear someone all the way across the room thanks to the acoustics in the wall.

intro1

3pm – Brooklyn Bridge. Connecting lower Manhattan with downtown Brooklyn, this neo-Gothic structure is a piece of wonderful engineering. Boasting striking views of the city from a different perspective, the hour and a half walk across is great way to enjoy the scenery of the city. If you get peckish then the iconic Grimaldi Pizzeria has its most famous restaurant under the bridge as you treat yourself to some of New York’s finest pizza. Afterwards, take the time to see the centre of international finance in the financial district in south Manhattan.

7pm – Dinner. As with any city, New York gives you an embarrassment of riches when it comes to restaurants and eateries. Plenty of the finer hotels, like the elegant Greenwich and the humbler Ace, have quality dining or you can get out on the street to places like The Spotted Pig gastropub, the Minetta Tavern steakhouse or Pulino’s which serves classic Italian-American cooking.
