Dubai sits on the eastern coastline of the Arabian Peninsula where its tremendous skyline stands proudly between the eerie emptiness of the desert and the glistening waters of the Persian Gulf.

Over the past few decades it has drawn in tourists of all kinds with guaranteed sunshine, high temperatures and the promise of luxury mixed with the famous hospitality of the locals. Magnificent hotels equipped with everything a guest could want can be found amongst beautiful beaches, world-class water parks, massive shopping malls, and beautiful mosques.

In addition to the above, the city hosts many professional sporting events. Top class athletes from around the world flock to Dubai to compete in the prestigious Dubai sporting scene. This makes for sporting events which are simply unmissable.

Here is a selection of the finest sports events that are taking place in the Dubai sporting calendar:

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium

Now in its 23rd year, the Dubai Championships are integral parts of the ATP and WTA tours. Playing outdoors in a city on the edge of the desert tests their endurance to new levels and ensures only the very best prosper. Last year’s victors, Roger Federer and Venus Williams, will return to defend their titles against the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Muraay, Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams. World class battles will be played out on the gorgeous hard courts of the Duty Free stadium making it an event to remember for all tennis fans.

Dubai World Cup

Meydan Racecourse

This is one of the biggest sporting events on the social and sporting calendar in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Over nine races there is a whopping $29.25 million on offer as prize money, making it the richest day of horse racing in the world. For such an event you could not ask for a better venue than the famous Meydan Racecourse. It is a must for anyone who loves the passion and excitement of big equestrian events alongside anyone who wants to experience Dubai as the locals do.

Camel Racing

Al Marmoum Camel Racetrack

Camel racing on the Arabian Peninsula can be traced back to at least the 7th century AD. This means it is both thrilling to watch and provides a fascinating glance into the heritage of the UAE. Culture is present everywhere with traditional costumes and rituals displayed and performed. Further to this, a day’s racing will often end in jubilant celebrations amongst the local population. As a formal sport, as opposed to simple impromptu competitions, it is relatively new but it has grown into big business over the past decades. The training that is given to the camels now encompasses everything from treadmills to swimming pools and a well-bred, trained camel can be sold for a very high price. This high tech training produces camels of blistering speeds with mounts often reaching 25 mph. Expect suspense, intensity and a fascinating insight into the history and culture of Dubai itself.

DP World Tour Championship- 19-22 November

Jumeirah Golf Estates

The Jumeirah Golf Estates hosts this famous championship, which is the climax of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. It is played on the Earth course which has a length of 7,675 yards, a par of 72, is littered with bunkers and was designed by veteran Australian golfer Greg Norman. As it is the final championship, it is essential viewing as the 60 top golfers on the tour battle it out to take home the championship and a share of the $8,000,000 prize money.

Surprises and suspense are sure to be present, like in 2011 when Alvaro Quiros famously eagled the 18th hole to win the European Tour. The 18th hole is also the most notorious on the course as it is a challenging par-five which is 651 yards in length and has water splitting the fairway to keep the golfers on their toes. All this action is hosted by the luxurious Jumeirah Golf Estates which provide a golf club that is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. With top golfers, such as Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, sure to be present it certainly is a must for any golf fan.
