Top 10 things to do in Mauritius – Part Two

by Travelbag on 11 December 2015, 09:12AM

Mauritius is one of the most beautiful islands in the world which is why it’s one of the top places to go on honeymoon. If you’re planning on going on holiday to this wonderful place, we want to help you have the best time possible by suggesting some great things you can do during your stay.

In Part 1 we suggested that you should visit Port Louis, the Champ de Mars Racecourse, Black River Gorges National Park, Trou aux Cerfs and La Vanille Reserve during your holiday. In Part 2 we have even more ideas for you…

Chamarel

You should spend one afternoon of your holiday visiting the village of Chamarel. It has a distillery so you can learn how rum is made and you can enjoy a meal in its wonderful restaurant. Afterwards, you can take your picture by the giant tortoises that live there.

You’ll be amazed when you see the two other local attractions, the ‘Seven Coloured Earth’ and the Chamarel Falls. The ‘Seven Coloured Earth’ is a group of sand dunes that are made up from blue, purple, red, brown, violet, green and yellow coloured sand. They are so pretty and unique, you won’t have seen anything like them before. You’ll be able to see the top of Chamarel Falls from the ‘Seven Coloured Earth’ but if you want to go swimming you’ll have to go to the bottom of the falls.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens

If you love nature then the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens in Pamplemousses are a must. They’re the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere and are named after the prime minister who led the island to independence in 1988.

There are plenty of plants, ponds, lilies and birds to admire as you wander through the gardens and you won’t need a guide. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon and if you feel too tired to walk around you could always hire a golf buggy!

Intro2

Eureka

If you’re interested in Mauritius’ colonial past, then you need to go to Eureka – a Creole mansion that was built in the 1830s and has been left as it was so you can step back in history. It’s the best museum on the island and you can learn so much as you go from room to room.

Make sure you spend time enjoying the mansion’s gardens as well as the main house, they are beautiful and lead to the Ravin waterfall, which is well worth exploring too.

Mahébourg

Mahébourg might only be small but it’s a great place to visit if you have time. You could go to the National History Museum and see some dodo skeletons or maybe check out the vibrant market and buy some souvenirs to take home. There are lots of great food stalls so you can grab a quick bite to eat while you’re out and about.

Bois Cheri Tea Plantation

There are plenty of tea plantations to visit on the island but Bois Cheri Tea Plantation has to be one of the best. Your guide will explain the history of Bois Cheri as he takes you through the factory and into the museum. You’ll be given plenty of opportunities to sample the tea on offer. Each tour lasts approximately an hour and a half. Why not purchase some tea to take back to the UK with you?

If you want to find out about the best beaches in Mauritius and the water sports you can try during your holiday, the people of Mauritius are very welcoming and will be happy to make their own personal recommendations to you.
