Great Aussie Road Trips: Victoria- Part Three

by Bethan Smyth on 21 December 2015, 13:12PM

The Great Southern Touring Route, wild coast, bountiful wildlife & rich history

The Great Southern Touring Route is a five-day round-trip offering visitors the chance to see the best of the Great Ocean Road, Grampians and Goldfields. Wind your away along the spectacular coastline, climb a summit in the magnificent Grampians National Park;  soak up the riches of the spa country's mineral springs and learn about Western Victoria's fascinating Aboriginal, gold-rush and maritime history.

The landscape of the Grampians National Park is vast and unique.  One of best vantage points in this spectacular region is Boroka Lookout, which showcases the peaks of this rugged mountain range and the Australian bush in all its glory. But one of most magical aspects of the Grampians is the wildlife. As you drive into the region, you will be greeted by the ‘locals’, the friendly local kangaroos which will be bounding along road-side in the bushland or grazing at the front of your accommodation when you wake up in the morning. This is one of the best places in Australia to see wildlife in its natural environment.

Intro1

This road trip is the perfect journey for visitors wanting to explore the rich Aboriginal history of the area and the ancient rock art sites. Include a visit to the Brambuk Culture Centre in your itinerary; here you can delve into the area's fascinating Aboriginal history and culture; or even join the Aboriginal guides on tours to ancient rock art sites and to learn more about the landscape's spiritual significance.

Intro2

After taking your time to explore the spectacular Great Ocean Road and spending a few nights in the Grampians, there are still two more must-visit regions on this road trip. The first, the Goldfields, and the town of Ballarat (once the richest town in the world) where you can uncover Australia’s gold rush history first hand by panning for gold and heading deep into the mines at outdoor museum Sovereign Hill.

Intro3

This road trip finishes as every journey should - in the spa-town of Daylesford. Famous for its world class spas and natural, mineral-rich spring, you can fully unwind and reflect on what has been a spectacular adventure.

A road trip is one of the best ways to experience Australia. Meet the locals, go at your own pace, take in the smells, tastes and sights of the country - four wheels will allow you to see the region your own way.
