Vast expanse of white sand beaches, lush palm trees, glimmering turquoise waters, verdant forests and the golden rays of the sun – such stunning scenery combined with a relaxed atmosphere, rich culture and beautiful people, makes the Dominican Republic a true gem. With the island’s incredible coastlines and array of charming beaches that cater to every need and desire, it’s nearly impossible to pick the best, let alone place them in order. However, you are guaranteed find your own piece of paradise.

Playa Rincón

The coconut palm-fringed beach backed by dense forest and the dramatic rocky cliffs of Cape Cabrón is a utopian beach. In the Samaná section, the 2km stretch of unspoilt, secluded, ivory sand beach is one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the Dominican Republic and the entire Caribbean. The main allure of this cosy beach is its picturesque views and serene atmosphere. The crystalline waters, with their delicately painted hues of turquoise, blue and green provide some of the best conditions for snorkelling.  Located on the west side, is the mouth of a river that can be explored by canoe.  The complete absence of facilities, tourist activity and rowdy water sports makes this beach even more enjoyable – enabling beach goers to take full advantage of its dazzling natural beauty. Those who make the effort to get to Playa Rincón, oftentimes find that they have the beach all to themselves.

Macoa Beach

Arguably one of the best beaches in the Caribbean and the world – as designated by UNESCO – Macoa Beach (in the Punta Cana area) delights visitors with its fine, white sand and perfect waves. The undeveloped beach, aside from small food stalls and a surfing camp, is the ideal place to learn how to surf and to hang out with locals. In addition to the perfect waters lapping this beach and the abundance of coconut palms, there are a number of enticing attractions in the surrounding area, including other beaches and the nearby Parque Nacional del Este ecological reserve.

Playa Dorada

Playa Dorada is the absolute best beach for snorkelling. Situated along the Amber Coast, this beach boasts incredible stretches of fine, tan-coloured sand that are punctuated by high-end luxury resorts. Playa Dorada faces the Atlantic Ocean, which means that swimming conditions are generally perfect except times during the winter when waves can become a little rough. The sparkling azure waters are also ideal for water-skiing and windsurfing.  All-inclusive, five-star hotels provide the service and modern amenities needed to enjoy this delightfully gorgeous and fun beach. Swim-up bars, world-class restaurants, casinos, spas, shopping malls and discos make Playa Dorada a great place to hang out when not exploring the ocean’s treasures. With several kid oriented attractions and perks, the beach is the perfect holiday destination for families.

Playa Cayo Levantado

While the trip to Cayo Levantado is not the easiest feat, the stunning island is definitely worth the effort. Located on the Samaná peninsula along the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Cayo Levantado is a treasure of an island. It showcases breath-taking views of three white sand-swathed beaches backed by lush tropical forests. There is not much in the way of facilities, but it’s a small price to pay for the seclusion and heavenly locale. The crystal, turquoise waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. And when not soaking up the rays, visitors are treated to scenic hikes through the jungle-like hills that house a number of unique flora and fauna. Whale watching excursions near the area are also available between January and March. The beach, also known as Bacardi Beach, got its name from the Bacardi rum commercials that were filmed here in the 1970’s. Great for all nature lovers, families, backpackers, and locals, this beach welcomes all who venture to its shores looking for an extremely rewarding and relaxing beach experience.

Playa Cabarete

Still relatively secluded and untouched by throngs of visitors, the 6km beach of Playa Cabarete is a water sports enthusiast’s dream-come-true. The paradisiacal beach is the most conducive to surfing, windsurfing and kitebaording.  The easily accessible, laid-back town has several budget-friendly hotels that make it more appealing than the glamorous all-inclusive resort beaches.  Known for its vibrant nightlife and exceptional restaurants (primarily located on Cabarete Bay), Cabarete tends to attract a younger crowd as well as a good mix of locals and visitors. Come dinnertime, many of the restaurants set their tables out on the beach providing the perfect setting for a romantic evening under the stars. With incredible sunrises, it’s not uncommon to party all night on the beach just to stay up and catch the picture-perfect views. Although kite surfing is the main attraction here, many believe that the true allure of Caberete is its beautiful landscapes and people.
