Situated at the centre of the Indochina peninsula, Thailand is a country that is steeped in lush jungle, mystique and also marvellous golden, sandy beaches that are just made to enjoy.

intro1

Essential Holiday Reading
Ideally you would like a good adventure novel to set the heart racing and fill the mind with wonder. An ideal choice for this would be something such as The Reef, written by Nora Roberts and published in 2009, which sees a young marine archaeologist and a sea-scarred man embark on a journey to find a common dream; the Angelique’s Curse, a jewelled amulet. Together, they go on a sea-faring adventure and discover as much about each other as they do about the treasure they are out to find. Alternatively, consider something that is set in Thailand itself. The Beach written by Alex Garland is a book that has gathered considerable fame, especially amongst backpackers. The plot involves a British backpacker who sets off in search of a mystical Thai beach that is rumoured to exist. If you have seen Danny Boyle’s film adaptation and loved it, you are bound to enjoy the novel.

intro2

Notable Thai Books
Thai novels include the social commentary The Four Reigns, written by Kukrit Pramoj that explores the lives of Thai nobility and the lives they lead from marriage to divorce, to life and death.  Jam Loey Rak is a 1960 novel written by Chuwung Chayachinda. It explores the story of Soorya who is mistaken for the cousin of a landowner who kidnaps her, wanting revenge for his brother’s death. The novel itself has been adapted into two movie versions and five television series. Jasmine Nights, written by Thai author S.P. Somtow in 1994, explores the life of a boy who on the eve of journeying to England to begin his secondary education is left in the care of three strange aunts and a terrifying uncle, who finds himself confronting issues such as bigotry and racism.

intro3Notable Thai Authors
One of the youngest authors within modern Thai literature is Pieretta Dawn, who at the age of 20 has written a spectacular ‘interspecies’ trilogy as well as a number of graphic novel adaptations winning a number of awards. Another outstanding Thai author was Princess Vibavadi who was a member of the Thai Royal Family and also a prolific novelist. Her career took in a number of settings, including the time spent travelling with her daughters and helping remote villagers.

intro4

Notable Thai Films
There have been numerous films set in Thailand ranging from small, independent movies to full-blown Hollywood blockbusters. Noteworthy films set within Thailand include the James Bond classic The Man With A Golden Gun (1974) starring Roger Moore and Christopher Lee. Further films such as The King and I (1956), The Beach (2000) and Air America (1990) starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. have all been set within Thailand. Thai cinema dates back to the earliest days of filmmaking and since then has grown into one of the biggest film industry markets in Southeast Asia. Through a number of genres, mainly horror and action, Thailand has produced some of the most financially lucrative and critically acclaimed films in modern cinema history.

intro5

Holiday Listening
Thailand has a lively music scene in which a number of different musical styles converge to create a melting pot of musical tastes. Thailand has a reputation for being a paradise on Earth with some of the most splendid beaches known to man, as well as some of the best tropical island paradise escapes. With this in mind, holiday listening could be limited to relaxing classical tones while you relax on the beach staring at the lovely blue sea that is staring right back at you. Go to a major centre such as Bangkok and you will be in for a treat as the party scene is one of the best.

intro6

Notable Thai Musicians
Christina Aguilar is one of Thailand’s most popular singers and is known to straddle numerous musical genres such as pop and dance. Similar artists include Vanessa Mae and Tata Young while modern Thai music appears heavily influenced by the hip-hop genre.
