Discovering Abu Dhabi

by Ellen Morgan on 25 November 2014, 11:11AM

intro1

On my recent trip to the United Arab Emirates, I discovered the Middle East was all I thought it would be and much more. A plethora of skyscrapers make up the city skyline and the architecture that fills most of the Emirates leaves most guests in awe. A new, up and coming metropolitan city; Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE and is one of its most desirable destinations.

intro2

Abu Dhabi is famous for being home to many gorgeous hotels, where guests are completely pampered so most of them may not even want to leave the complex during their entire stay. We were lucky enough to stay at Park Hyatt, Abu Dhabi, which is a 5* luxury beach resort located on the prestigious Saadiyat Island, overlooking a beautiful stretch of beach and glistening sea. The winner of numerous prestigious hotel awards including ‘Best Abu Dhabi Hotel’ and ‘Best Luxury Hideaway Resort’, the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi definitely lives up to expectations.

intro3

Culture in the Middle East has always been a way of life and a proud part of society. An array of religious buildings and places of worship can be found around Abu Dhabi but none are quite as beautiful as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With 80 domes, 1,000 columns and 24 carat gold chandeliers, the Grand Mosque could be considered as one of the most regal buildings in the world. Diverse Islamic architecture can be seen throughout the mosque as a symbol of the unity of Islam. This is demonstrated through gorgeous décor on the walls and delicate stained glass windows.  I would highly recommend a ‘Sunset Tour’ of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to experience the mosque in all its splendour.

intro4

Yas Island is another major tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi. We drove for 30 minutes from the centre of Abu Dhabi to Yas Island, home to Yas Waterworld, Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi (another outstanding five star luxury hotel) and Yas Links Abu Dhabi (an award winning golf course) and much more. A notable attraction on Yas Island and a favourite for many people is Ferrari World. A remarkable structure, Ferrari World encompasses the glitz, glamour and speed of a Ferrari in one building. It has many shops, restaurants, rides and attractions to keep the whole family entertained!

intro5

Although the UAE is home to some of the most spectacular buildings in the world, city life is just one part of Abu Dhabi. Just a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of the town’s centre is Abu Dhabi Corniche, where we explored carefully sculpted waterfront with a children’s play area, cafes and restaurants as well as the Corniche Beach, a relaxing alternative to the busy city.

intro6

Situated amongst the dusty sands of the Middle Eastern deserts, Abu Dhabi is still surrounded by sand as far as the eye can see. We were lucky enough to experience sand bashing on a desert safari, an exhilarating ride on a 4x4 through the golden sands up and down more hills than you could ever count! Followed by an authentic Arabian meal under the stars where you could smoke from shisha pipes and try on conventional Arabian dress this is the ultimate experience.

Reflecting back on my once in a life time trip to the UAE, Abu Dhabi is emerging as a great holiday destination where luxury is available to all guests and surprisingly at very affordable prices!
