What is new in Canada

by Rianne Ojeh on 24 January 2014, 11:01AM

Exciting cosmopolitan cities, swathes of untouched virgin land, snowy peaked mountains piercing the skies, absorbing urban lifestyles... Canada is where nature and man’s finest efforts merge to create a utopian haven. A Canada holiday offers up numerous options for every discernible traveller with vibrant, diverse metropolises as Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa enticing the city slickers, the ski slopes of Whistler and Sun Peaks appealing to adventurers and the fascinating heritage of Quebec and Nova Scotia perfect for culture vultures. Perhaps Canada’s greatest highlight, however, is its incredible natural splendour, best enjoyed in its countless national parks, most notably Banff and Jasper, where picture-perfect settings and extraordinary scenes will stay with you forever and always.

Canada will once again be in the spotlight in 2014. This year will see the opening of a major new tourism attraction in the Canadian Rockies, a brand new Niagara Falls boat operator and a new downtown Toronto Aquarium. There will also be increased flight capacity ensuring that getting to Canada is now easier than it has ever been.

Glacier Skywalk - Panorama

Floating in the sky in Alberta
Test your nerve on Alberta’s new Glacier Skywalk opening on 01 May 2014. It’s an award-winning architectural masterpiece, a great steel arc protruding from a cliffside supporting a glass-floored catwalk that floats in mid-air offering a mind-opening and mind-blowing perspective of the Columbia Icefield region, a classic Rockies’ destination and one of National Geographic Traveller magazine’s “Canada’s 50 Places of a Lifetime.” The experience begins with a 400m (1,312ft) walkway following the edge of the steep canyon wall. Along the way, six interpretive stations explore the geographical, geological, glaciological, environmental and evolutionary history of the Columbia Icefield, a unique eco-system that is one of the few remnants of the great ice sheets that covered much of North America during the last Ice Age. This is followed by the highlight: a glass promenade that curves 30 m (98 ft) out from the cliff face. Hold your breath, step out and look 280m (918ft) down through glass under your feet at the wild Sunwapta Valley.

Niagara Falls

Fun for the family in Ontario
Ontario will be showcasing a brand new boat operator on the Niagara River. Hornblower Tours will be revealing a new line up of Niagara Falls River experiences, from Sunrise and Sunset tours out to the spectacular Falls by boat alongside the more traditional trips.  Be sure to wear a rainproof coat or Mac as getting wet will be order of the day!

Ripley's Aquarium Toronto

A few miles away in downtown Toronto, the aquatic theme continues with the recent opening of Ripley’s Aquarium, just steps away from the world famous CN Tower, making this a must do combination for those lucky travellers visiting Toronto.

Air Canada plane flying over the mountains in Canada

New routes to Canada
Air Canada launches a major expansion to the UK in 2014, increasing passenger capacity to its key destinations. As part of the summer schedule, Air Canada’s leisure subsidiary, Air Canada rouge, will launch seasonal nonstop flights Toronto – Manchester, supplementing the carrier’s non-stop summer service three times a week between Edinburgh and Toronto. They also announced a Toronto – Dublin route, starting on 02 May 2014.  They will also be expanding the availability of its new Premier Economy cabin introducing it on the Vancouver – London Heathrow flights year round, as well as on Montreal-London Heathrow flights during the peak summer months. Air Canada will furthermore deploy larger aircraft from its international wide body fleet on flights from Calgary to London Heathrow, Montreal – London and on Vancouver to London.

IcelandAir also recently announced increased services to Edmonton, Alberta year round and an earlier launch date of 5 March 2014. Edmonton will be Icelandair’s 13th North American gateway and joins Toronto as the second gateway in Canada.  In addition to increasing service to Edmonton, Icelandair will offer extra capacity with 17 additional flights across its network including more flights from Glasgow, Gatwick and the launch of Vancouver starting 13 May to 12 October.  These flights complement already established routes to Toronto and Halifax.
