Visit an award-winning city - Melbourne

by Bella Davis on 20 August 2014, 15:08PM

The vibrant city of Melbourne is known for its true beauty and charming culture and is now picking up a growing number of awards including Conde Nast Traveler readers crowning Melbourne as the friendliest city in the world. And now, today Melbourne has been named the world’s most livable city, topping the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Livability index for the fourth year running. However, these accolades are not the only two, with Melbourne also achieving the World’s Best Wine List and is often at the top of bucket lists for many.  Anyone looking for a wonderful holiday experience would be wise to visit this city and get fully immersed in the vibrant culture, friendly people and amazing food and drink scene.

intro1

Knowing that the locals are all so friendly means it is acceptable allocating a whole 10 minutes for a response to the question ‘where is the best place to eat?’ But even for the Melbournians this can be tricky as Melbourne has an ever evolving restaurant scene with brilliant bars and cool and trendy cafes often hidden down a series of bustling creative laneways behind an unmarked door, in a basement or high on a rooftop. This is perfect for those looking for adventure, making you work for your reward.

intro2

Melbourne is home to Australasia’s best restaurant and the 32nd best in the world – Ben Shewry’s Attica. After indulging in a meal, or two, why not visit world-class galleries and museums all around you? You don’t have to travel far to see amazing off-the-wall art lurking around every corner in the world’s greatest street art capital. See anything from neon animals in Cocker Alley to video installations in Manchester Lane and paste-ups in Westwood Place.

intro3

Coffee lovers who love the everlasting quest for the ‘God Shot’ (the perfect, divine expresso) will be overwhelmed with serious contenders from Melbourne’s essential coffee experiences; try Brother Baba Budan, 359 Little Bourke Street, and Auction Rooms, 103-107 Errol Street.

intro4

This delightfully quirky city is bursting with ambience and constantly has a range of things to do including the Melbourne International Food & Wine Festival, the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships, the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and the mesmerizing aroma of the earthy Truffle Festival which is being introduced this summer. Another new addition to look forward to is Heston Blumenthal’s renowned three-Michelin starred The Fat Duck.

The die-hard sports fans will not be disappointed in this cutting- edge city as Melbourne is home to five international standard sporting facilities (including four with retractable roofs), and all within walking distance of the city centre. Melbourne has also been labelled Ultimate Sports City from the SportBusiness 2014 awards for a second time proving there is nothing Melbourne doesn’t have on offer.

intro5

It is a known fact that Australia is one of the best for the Great Outdoors and with the State of Victoria blessed with stunning landscapes and fascinating animals such as the cuddly koalas and bouncing kangaroos, this city is ideal for the curious and active. For the ultimate roadtrip, set out for the nearby Great Ocean Road, one of the world's most scenic coastal drives, and see the 12 Apostles, iconic surf breaks and waterfalls or head to three of Victoria’s most beautiful regions linked by the South East Touring Triangle: the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges, the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island.

intro6

Melbourne is flat and full of parks so you can cycle almost everywhere - better for the environment, better for your health. This happening place is surprisingly diverse and full of variety and with everything in close proximity even the tranquil sandy beaches are not far from reach. Excellent for those who want to pack their holiday with excitement and can explore comfortably on foot, on a bicycle or use the main form of transport in one of the only cities where trams are still used.

intro7

If after visiting all the festivals, shows and landscapes has made you hungry and you’re still looking to tick another off the bucket list then why not try the award winning world’s best pizza at 400 Gradi.

Don’t miss out on shopping heaven, for where when it comes to fashion; black is always the new black! The city centre is home to some extremely quirky vintage stores and is chock-a-block with cool local independent designers. But for those seeking high-end products why not visit the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street or the three city centre malls for a range of designer and urban stores.

intro8

One neighbourhood not to be missed is the funky and unique St Kilda, with wonderful markets, crazy nightlife and tasty food to tickle your taste buds with a wide selection of bars and restaurants in Fitzroy Street.

So when will you book your holiday? The award winning city of Melbourne is a great travel hub with direct flights coming from many parts of the world.
