Exotic Destinations a 10 hour flight from the UK

intro

For most, getting out and seeing the world is a lifelong ambition. There’s a very good reason why we yearn for sandy beaches, soaring mountains and fruity cocktails by the sea. It’s not just that we need a break from the pressures of work and family routine from time to time - though that’s obviously of great importance too - it’s simply that human beings were designed to wander. In prehistoric times, our ancestors regularly travelled great distances in search of food, shelter, water and warmth.

Now, your big journey is more likely to end with a beautiful sunset and a Mojito than a fight with a sabre toothed tiger but, in many ways, it’s just as essential. If you ever find yourself hungering for more than that bi-annual trip to Benidorm, it’s probably time to start thinking about travelling further afield. It can be a little daunting at first, especially for those who’ve never flown long haul before, but you’d be surprised at just how easy and comfortable it is.

It’s not like you have to commit to a fourteen hour flight just to experience somewhere exotic either – Barbados, Oman, Puerto Rico and Venezuela are all well within ten hours of a London airport. If you’re looking for somewhere with a cooler climate than New York and Washington D.C are both under eight hours away. These days, long haul flights are a breeze – you get to watch new movie releases, enjoy drinks and snacks (even a little alcohol, if you choose) and curl up with a pillow and a blanket if you’re flying through the night. Plus, the experts at Travelbag are always here with tips and tricks to make your long haul flight a positive experience.

intro1

A Slice of Paradise in Barbados
You only have to Google the word Barbados to be bombarded with the type of images regularly used on the front of luxury holiday brochures. As far as visual appeal, it’s extremely difficult to beat this utterly gorgeous part of the world. At just under nine hours, it’s one of the longer flights featured on this list, but it’s still well within the capabilities of a fit and healthy adventurer. With a tailor-made package holiday from Travelbag, you could be enjoying the coral rich waters and super laidback lifestyle of modern Barbados in no time. According to locals, the breathtakingly beautiful Bottom Bay is by far the best beach on the island – grab your towel, slap on some sunscreen and get out there.

intro2

Getting Glamorous in St Lucia
If you were to travel just to the left of Barbados, you’d find the slighter larger Caribbean island of St Lucia. This equally gorgeous slice of paradise takes the same amount of time to travel to, but it tends to be a bit more exclusive than its little sister. It has the same soft white sands, azure blue oceans and lush, tropical mountains, but where Barbados has become the poster child for Caribbean holidays, St Lucia is quieter and more private. It’s a big hit with the Hollywood jet set, who are regularly snapped lounging on luxury yachts just off the coast.

intro3

Shake Hands with Nature in Oman
The Sultanate of Oman is a teeny tiny little country right on the southern edge of the Middle East. If you ask most people about it, they’ll shake their heads and offer you a blank expression – that is, until you show them a few photographs of the place. For a country that few people know exists, Oman is achingly beautiful. You really can’t know just how beautiful unless you’ve been, which is lucky because it’s only seven hours away on a plane. With vast deserts, intricate architecture, golden beaches and tropical lagoons aplenty, Oman is a dream destination for anybody who loves both sunshine and the great outdoors. Plus, you’re guaranteed a bargain holiday every time – as Oman isn’t quite on the radar for mainstream tourism just yet, it’s a very cheap place to visit.

intro4

Soak Up the Culture in New York
For those who’d rather lounge in the shade than tackle searing forty degree temperatures, the world offers plenty of exciting choices. There are very few places on the planet more exhilarating than New York. A visit to the Big Apple should be top of your bucket list, because it’s a mere seven hour flight from a London airport. Once you touch down on US soil, there’ll be so much to see and do that it’ll feel like a crime to waste time sleeping – even if it is in one of the beautiful boutique hotels featured on the Travelbag website. There’s not much to say about this destination that hasn’t already been said – if you’ve never been before, there’s nothing quite like acting the tourist in the coolest, noisiest city in the world.

intro5

Find a Home Away From Home in Antigua
If you, unbelievably, need even more encouragement to book a flight to the Caribbean, let the magnificent island of Antigua work its charms on you. It’s a very small country, one that shares its island with Barbuda, another similarly tiny Caribbean nation. It might be dainty, but what it lacks in size, Antigua certainly makes up for in personality. How can you resist a country that renamed its highest mountain after President Barack Obama, or that has a natural port as gorgeous as the horseshoe shaped Falmouth Harbour? This charming little island is a favourite amongst the consultants at Travelbag, and they never tire of helping intrepid holidaymakers get there.
