Perth's Stunning Sandy Beaches

by Andrea Anastasakis on 03 May 2013, 14:05PM

One spectacular beach sunset after another. Perth never disappoints. There's nothing like going for an afternoon swim followed by fish and chips for dinner on the beach as you watch the sunset. A classic Australian experience.

Western Australia's coastline has some of the most unique beaches in the world, from the aptly named Shell Beach where the beach is made up entirely of shells to Lucky Bay near Esperance where you share the beach with kangaroos. But Perth is unique too as Australia's only capital city where you can watch the sunset over the ocean.

Perth Ocean Sunset

Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach is the most popular place to enjoy a drink and dinner by the beach but if you want a quiet spot for a morning swim head towards Fremantle to Leighton Beach. Leighton has some of the whitest sand of all of Perth's beaches and the calm water is ideal for swimming. It's one of the least visited city beaches so if crowds are not your thing then this is the beach for you.

Cottesloe Beach, Perth

The longest stretch of Perth coastline which is not built up in any way can be found at Swanbourne Beach, just north of Cottesloe. It's remote and secluded but popular with those who like to get their gear off. Even if swimming in your birthday suit isn't your idea of a good time, Swanbourne Beach is undeniably beautiful.

Perth's sweltering summer temperatures are tempered by what we call the 'Fremantle Doctor', the cooling sea breeze which usually arrives late morning. The unrelenting wind and the sand which comes with it puts a dampener on any fun day out at the beach so it's best to arrive early and leave at the first sign of sand in your face. The wind usually dies down in the early evening which is when the beaches get busy again with the after work crowd who like to jog or walk along the beach.

Perth Beaches

One of the most family friendly beaches in Perth is South Beach. It's a very small beach in South Fremantle surrounded by a park which is a popular picnic spot. The calmer, slightly protected waters are more suitable for young kids who might not feel comfortable in the bigger swells at Cottesloe and Scarborough.

South Beach, Perth

The great thing about South Beach is its proximity to Fremantle's restaurants and cafes. The popular Pickled Fig cafe is situated right on the beach or choose from the many cafes along nearby South Terrace. If you're staying in historic Fremantle, South Beach is by far the prettiest beach in the port city.
