Beautiful Barbados

Barbados is well-known for its celebrity visitors, who enjoy the year-around sunshine and pristine beaches. However, no matter what your budget or style, you are sure to enjoy a great holiday that suits you on this beautiful island. Matthew Mitchell, sales consultant at Travelbag’s Chester branch reports back from a recent trip to the Caribbean.

Having been to Barbados several times but not since 2005, I was very eager to see if the island had changed. Several airlines offer direct flights from London to Barbados with easy connections from most regional airports. But on this occasion we flew with British Airways and decided to upgrade to their World Traveller Plus cabin (Premium Economy). This was extra money well-spent as it guarantees additional legroom, high quality meals served and great entertainment throughout the flight.

On arrival in Barbados, I would recommend to use the VIP Fast track Service, which saves a good 1 hour at immigration. It only costs around £15pp, meaning you can start your holiday that little bit faster.

Our first night was spent at the award-winning Turtle Beach resort on the south coast of the island in St Lawrence Gap. This all-inclusive hotel is a particular great choice for families. The hotel has a traditional Caribbean feel being situated right on the beach surrounded by tropical gardens. The pool area has separate areas for children, as well as a couples pool and waterfall if you want to get away from the kids.

The following day I started with a brisk walk down one of the island’s famed beaches taking in the gorgeous turquoise water and luscious surroundings. Having worked up an appetite, I took full advantage of the delicious breakfast before setting off to my home for the 2nd night, the Colony Club Hotel

The Colony Club is an exclusive retreat with elegance, colonial charm and all modern cons. It has an amazing backdrop of well-groomed gardens and stylish pools. Lime Grove outdoor lifestyle centre is only a short walk away and offers a great array of designer shops, local boutiques, bars and restaurants. It is open until late seven days a week.

Every Sunday the hotel serves a full roast on the outdoor terrace with a live steel band playing in the back ground. This is a very popular place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon. If you’re lucky you can see some local horses get washed in the ocean, which is very entertaining, especially when the horses don’t want to be washed and there is only one guy handling several horses!

The next day we stayed at The House on the ‘Platinum West Coast’. This is THE place to be seen and a bit of celebrity spotting is always on the cards. It is a stylish boutique hotel full of character that offers 24hrs ambassador service, which you normally only find in large hotels.

In the evening, we ate at one of Barbados most-acclaimed restaurants: Daphne’s. It is well-known and very highly rated and serves modern Italian classics infused with the island’s local flavours. It is located directly on the beach with fantastic views over the ocean creating a magical atmosphere. Make sure you book a table as this place gets extremely busy, from locals through to guests.

A trip to explore the island is always worth doing. You will find a vibrant culture that has its own distinctive identity.  Visit one of the local rum distilleries, trek through one of the national parks or swim with turtles. There is really something for everyone. Car hire is easy to arrange and driving straight forward since they drive on the same side as the UK.

Something we didn’t get time to do on this visit but something I would certainly recommend if you are in Barbados on a Friday or Saturday evening, is to get yourself down to Oistins on the south coast for a typical Bajan street party with live bands, music, fresh seafood, jerk chicken and much more.

Every day in Barbados is a celebration and it is well worth a visit if you are after a holiday with lots of activities on offer. They have a diverse selection of hotels on the island, from the intimate 5* luxury through to 3* local bed & breakfasts. But ultimately it is all about the island!
