Top 10 things to see and do on Australia’s Gold Coast

Q1 Building

The 323 metre Q1 Building is not only one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic landmarks, it is also recognised across Australia. The tallest residential building in the world until recently, the Q1’s location on the beachfront ensures spectacular unbroken views across the Pacific Ocean, the coastline and the surrounding area. Though these vistas are best enjoyed during pleasant weather, don’t be put off scaling to the summit during a storm as the spire often attracts lightening, a phenomenon best experienced from the observation deck…

Gold by name, gold by nature

Stretching 40km across the south-east Australian outline, the Gold Coast features more than 30 excellent quality beaches, each shimmering in the hues of its given name. Though incredibly popular, there is enough beach for everyone to find their own private spot, even if the likes of Surfers’ Paradise and Burleigh Heads attract the majority of sand dwellers. Whether you prefer to swim, sunbathe or surf, the Gold Coast offers a tremendous choice.

A Surfers’ Paradise – literally!

The clue is in the name, but Surfers’ Paradise is exactly what it says it is… In truth, the wave breaks and lively atmosphere can be replicated across the Gold Coast, but Surfers’ Paradise is the capital of the watersports region. Surfing is naturally popular, but jet-skiing and fishing can also be enjoyed at this water-based mecca.

Gold Coast 600

Sport is a religion for many Australians so when the Gold Coast 600 motorsport event rolls into town every October, the streets are a hive of noise, action and excitement. The three-day extravaganza is a round of the hugely popular V8 Supercar Championship, one that brings thousands onto the streets to watch some spectacular competition. If you happen to be in Surfers’ Paradise during October, it’ll be hard to avoid but easy to enjoy.

Golf

The excellent weather and pleasant climate makes the Gold Coast the ideal venue to enjoy a round or two of golf. Home to some of the world’s finest and most challenging courses, the Gold Coast can accommodate every handicap, from international standards, to amateurs, to novices.

Theme Parks

The Gold Coast specialises in family entertainment and this is no better represented by the outstanding choice of theme parks available, including Sea World, Warner Bros, Movie World, Wet ‘n’ Wild, Dreamworld and White Water World. Dreamworld is the largest theme park in Australia and includes four rollercoasters, plus a myriad of other rides, attractions and activities.

Hinterland

Australia’s national colours are gold and green, so if the coastline is the gold on this palette, then the green is surely the ‘Hinterland’ behind it. A swathe of verdant green land, the crests and troughs are almost the antithesis of the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast, where markets, vineyards and quiet corners can be discovered. Scale Tamborine Mountain and climb Mt Warning to discover the best of this pretty landscape.

Whale watching

Visit the Gold Coast between June and October and you have the opportunity to witness one of nature’s most spectacular creatures, the humpback whale, pass through the area. Frolicking and swimming in the waters off the Gold Coast, the whales head north from the Antarctic to warmer oceans, before venturing back a few months later. Come in August and you’ll see whale traffic heading into both directions!

Hot-air ballooning

Arguably the finest way to explore the beautiful surroundings of the Gold Coast and the surrounding area is on a peaceful hot-air balloon ride. Travel along the beautiful coastline and appreciate the spectacular views over Tamborine Mountain and Mount Warning, as well as glance into the distance at rising buildings of Brisbane in the distance. Vantage points do not get more impressive…

Seafood

Tempt your taste buds with some delicately prepared seafood, most of which has been freshly caught that day. Sample wonderfully juicy oysters, crabs, scallops and prawns at any number of the excellent restaurants situated on the Gold Coast, or even go as far to arrange a fishing trip to catch your own dinner!
