10 Day Tasmanian Wonders AAT Kings

This ten day tour will pack in the many delights that Tasmania has to offer as you visit the towns of Hobart and Launceston and explore the beauty of Cable Mountain and the Freycinet National Park.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Hobart
Transfer from the airport to your hotel prior to an afternoon tour of Hobart, taking in three of the landmark locations at Battery Point, Salamanca Place and Constitution Dock – the latter being the arrival point for crews when they finish the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Returning to the hotel, enjoy a welcome drink and dinner with the tour director and your fellow travellers.
Day 2: Russell Falls
Heading west into the Mt. Field National Park, home to the spectacular three-tiered Russell Falls, you’ll journey on to Lake St. Clair for a lunch break alongside some of the most breathtaking views you’ll experience on your trip. Driving along the rainforest-bordered road of Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, the onward journey takes you to Queenstown for a two-night stay.
  • West Coaster Motel, Queenstown (B,D)
Day 3: Gordon River Cruise
Travel to the fishing village of Strahan on the Macquarie Harbour to join a cruise, including lunch, on the Gordon River. Enjoying the untouched wilderness alongside the crystal clear water, you’ll be left amazed by the 1,000 year old Huon Pine found amongst the lush green forest at Heritage Landing before enjoying free time following the cruise in the afternoon. While some may like to relax, a visit to the Huon Pine Museum or a ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway are both options for those who prefer to keep busy.
  • West Coaster Motel, Queenstown (B,L,D)
Day 4: Cradle Mountain
Travelling past Lake Plimsoll, you’ll head towards Cradle Mountain National Park and after a visit to the town of Waldheim, you’ll make the trip up to Dove Lake for dramatic views of the mountain itself. More stunning scenery awaits as you head past Table Cape with its views of the lighthouse, coastline and Bass Strait with the town of Stanley then in your sights as you journey towards the overnight stop in Smithton.
  • Tall Timbers, Smithton (B,D)
Day 5: Smithton – Launceston
The period property at Highfield Historic Site is the first port of call on a busy day before heading for Burnie, where you’ll learn more about the history of the port city with a guided tour of the Paper Makers Workshop. Travelling along the cost through Penguin and Ulverstone, there is the chance to explore the Town of Murals at Sheffield, with product testing at the Ashgrove Cheese Factory to follow before arriving at Launceston.
  • Mercure Hotel, Launceston (B)
Day 6: Launceston
A matter of minutes outside the town, you’ll pay a visit to Cataract Gorge, regarded as the area’s own 'piece of wilderness' and one of its major draws. Enjoy time admiring the exotic flora, take a walk across the suspension bridge or ride on what is believed to be the longest single-span chairlift in the world to gain aerial view of your surroundings. A visit to the Tasmania Zoo affords the opportunity to get up close to the Tasmania Devil and other native wildlife before the remainder of the afternoon is yours to do as you wish.
  • Mercure Hotel, Launceston (B)
Day 7: Freycinet National Park
After a morning visit to Bridestowe Lavender Farm (Dec-Mar only), you’ll head out towards St Helens for a lunchtime break, visiting the intricate war memorial carvings at Legerwood and the old mining town of Derby as you travel through the Myrtle Rainforest at Weldborough Pass. Arriving at Freycinet National Park, you’ll enjoy a guided walk with a National Park Ranger to take in astonishing views of brilliant blue water, forests and golden beaches with Cape Tourville Lookout being particularly memorable.
  • Beachfront at Bicheno (B,D)
Day 8: Bicheno – Port Arthur
Heading down the coast through Swansea, Orford and Sorell to the morning tea destination of Copping, you’ll then journey onwards along an impressive cliff-lined coast to and past the once guarded checkpoint at Eaglehawk Neck before arriving at Port Arthur. A cruise around the Isle of the Dead and guided walk taking in the Historic Site and prison awaits, with the option of a lantern-lit ghost tour in the evening.
  • Fox and Hounds Inn, Port Arthur (B, D)
