Galapagos - Escorted Tour
Travel to Quito and embark on an adventure through the untrammelled wilderness of the Galapagos. With almost 1,000km of water lying between them and the South American mainland, the islands of the Galapagos were able to evolve largely unfettered by the presence of humanity and its ambitions. Read of Charles Darwin's voyage there in the early nineteenth century and he tells of hawks that would come to perch on his shoulder and sea lions waddling up to inspect him. Today, thankfully, much remains as it was then. So if close encounters with the winged, scaled and finned kind are what you're after, you really can't go past this sailing trip through the archipelago's remote northern islands.

Day 1: Quito
Flanked on either side by the dramatic Andes ranges, Quito is without doubt one of South America's most spectacular capital cities. If you can, it's well worth arriving a few days before this trip starts and exploring its quaint Old Town, many churches and eclectic outdoor markets.
Day 2: San Cristobal
Brave an early morning rise for the flight out to San Cristobal. Learn about the archipelago's ecology, and the threats facing it today, during a visit to the San Cristobal Interpretation Center.
Day 3: Santa Fe/Plaza Sur
Cruise to the island of Santa Fe and jump in for a swim with the local – and very inquisitive – sea lions. See land iguanas scampering across the cacti strewn volcanic landscape of Plaza Sur and swallow-tailed gulls swooping down from the island's southern cliffs.
Day 4: Genovesa
Keep an eye out for pods of dolphins on the sail across to Genovesa. This rocky outpost is a haven for birdlife and in walking out to the rookeries you can expect to see frigate birds, red-footed boobies, storm petrels and more. Don the snorkel and head underwater in search of diamond sting rays, turtles and moray eels off Darwin Beach.
Day 5: Santiago/Isla Rabida
Walk across the volcanic landscape of Bahia Sullivan on the look out for Sally Lightfoot crabs, marine iguanas and penguins. Visit Rabida Island's wildlife rich lagoon and spot pink flamingos, nesting pelicans and pintail ducks.
Day 6: Santa Cruz
Set out by Panga to the red mangrove wetlands of Caleta Tortuga Negra – a breeding area for green turtles and popular hangout for eagle rays and Galapagos sharks. Board the flight back to the mainland and spend another night in delightful Quito.
Day 7: Quito
Why not go for a wander through the Old Town and seek out the city's best coffee spot before ending your trip this morning.
