Between historical boat races, international music festivals and world-class motor racing, Macao knows how to put on a celebration. The destination has become something of a festivity hotspot with visitors due to its schedule chock-full of events. With Autumn here, the festival season is ready to kick off with some of Macao’s most popular celebrations. So whether you’re looking to get your groove on this October, catch some of the latest movie talent in December or want to experience two New Year celebrations in 2018, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of the spectacular festivals and events Macao is hosting in the upcoming months –

31st Macao International Music Festival (29th September – 30th October 2017)

From the Western rhythms of blues and jazz to the orchestral harmony of folk and opera, the Macao International Music Festival is an annual celebration of all things musical. Featuring an array of talented singers, eloquent choirs and gifted musicians from all over the world, this star-studded festival is a sure-fire way for lovers of music to feed the soul. Make sure you catch the The Soweto Gospel Choir, The Vienna Philharmonic and the award-winning jazz singer, Jazzmeia Horn among this year’s line-up.

Mid-Autumn Festival (4th October 2017)

Taking place during October, Macao’s Mid-Autumn Festival sees the streets come alive with colourful lanterns and helpings of local delicacies, all in homage to the moon itself. The festival signals the time of year when the moon is at its fullest, and so is the perfect time for the locals and visitors like yourself to celebrate the myths and legends surrounding it. Don’t forget to try some of the local mooncake while watching the lanterns set off from the beaches and parks.  

64th Macau Grand Prix (16th – 19th November 2017)


Get ready for a turbo-charged experience this November at the Macau Grand Prix, one of the region’s most exciting annual events. Watch as the motorcycle riders and car racers both navigate the sharp corners and fast straights of the infamously difficult Guia Circuit in a pulse-pounding competition that is sure to have you gripping the edge of your seat. As one of the only street circuit racing events to host both car and motorcycle events, race fans and first-timers are in for a real treat.

Light Festival (3rd – 31st December 2017)


Bathe in the glow of Macao’s illuminated streets as Christmas creeps ever closer and the Light Festival begins. Take a stroll down to some of Macao’s most prominent areas during December to see the streets and buildings around you brought to life with immersive video projections and incredible, dazzling lights that are sure to impress. Enjoy a romantic time beneath the twinkling lights or explore the setting with family to get the most out of this spectacular pre-Christmas celebration.

2nd International Film Festival & Awards Macao (8th – 14th December 2017)


Created in 2016, the International Film Festival & Awards Macao showcases the best of Asian and international cinema, bringing together the cinematic talents of East and West under the 2017 theme “A new avenue to the world of films”. With Brit Mike Goodridge (former CEO of Protagonist Pictures) as this year’s Artistic Director, and Hollywood star Jeremy Renner (Wind River, Hawkeye in several Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters, The Hurt Locker) as Talent Ambassador, be sure to catch this year’s event and films.

Chinese New Year (mid-February 2018)


The Chinese New Year festivities are due to run from mid-February 2018. Ushering in the Year of the Dog for 2018, the locals flock to the streets and put on a show of incredible daytime parades that feature everything from decorated floats to dancing dragons. The fun doesn’t end there, as night falls various buildings and streets are lit up while the looming Macau Tower hosts an awe-inspiring fireworks display that can best be seen from the Taipa shore or near the Tower itself.

Macao International Dragon Boat Races (June 2018)


Watch as teams of racers gather along the waters of Nam Van Lake in their intricately designed dragon boats to compete in one of the oldest organised sports in the world. Long considered a historically significant competition, the annual Macao International Dragon Boat Races has been a vibrant spectacle for locals and visitors to enjoy, with plenty of international competitors all vying for the esteemed medals. With the fun and excitement of the race comes an unmistakable party-like ambiance that is sure to get you in the spirit as you rally behind your favourite team.

30th Macao International Fireworks Display Contest (September & October 2018)


Sit back and watch as groups of international teams come together to light up the night sky with their incredible firework displays at the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest. Marvel at the combination of fireworks, lasers and music that culminates in a choreographed spectacle that has become synonymous with Macao. Be sure to find yourself a good vantage point along the shorefront of the Macau Tower and enjoy the show.
