Top seven things to do in the Maldives

by Travelbag on 23 October 2015, 13:10PM

The Maldives is like no place on earth. It’s the perfect place to have a luxury holiday and experience the finer things in life.
Holidays in the Maldives are all about relaxing and taking things easy but this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. The Maldives mightn’t have as many attractions as other holiday destinations but there are still things to see and do. We hope this guide gives you plenty of inspiration and helps you have an unforgettable trip.

Go island hopping

With over a thousand coral islands making up the Maldives there’s no better place in the world to go island hopping. Just put down your book, jump on a boat and let your guide take you on a trip to the different fishing villages and the beautiful uninhabited islands!

You’ll be able to learn about the history and culture of the islands, watch dance and music performances, see fishermen at work and explore the wonderful lagoons.

Get a bird’s eye view

Take to the skies and view the islands from above with a seaplane photo flight. You’ll be blown away by how beautiful the different islands and lagoons are and you’ll be able to take some wonderful photos thanks to the large windows.

See the reef for yourself

There are lots of diving schools in the Maldives and there will probably be one based in your resort so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to go diving, even if you’re a beginner.

If you want to see the reef but don’t fancy getting wet then you could take a ride in the Whale Submarine. You’ll be picked up from the jetty in the capital Malé and taken to the embarking platform before you submerge. It’s perfect for children and people who aren’t comfortable with diving themselves.

Visit Manta Point

If you love diving then a visit to Manta Point is a must. It’s home to so many manta rays that you won’t be able to count them –there are plenty of varieties of turtles, fish and sharks to spot too. Manta rays can reach up to 7 meters in width so be prepare to be amazed by their sheer scale and size.

Get your adrenaline pumping

Experienced divers should try to do the Kudarah Thila dive when a current is running so they can get up close and personal with black corals, sea fans and whip corals. This dive shouldn’t be attempted by inexperienced divers because of the risks involved.

Explore Malé

No trip to the Maldives would be complete without a visit to the capital city. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars for you to try. If you can, why not stay on into the evening and experience the vibrant nightlife?

If you can, go on a city tour and find out about the culture of the place during your trip. The fish market is fascinating and you can sample some wonderful fish dishes in the nearby cafes and restaurants. There is also a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 2004 Tsunami by the beach.

Take a couple of hours to visit the National Museum and find out about the history of the islands. The building might be ugly on the outside but on the inside there are plenty of stunning artefacts to admire. The highlight of your visit will be seeing the 6 meter long skeleton of a Longman’s Beaked Whale.

Treat yourself

During your holiday to the Maldives there will be plenty of opportunities to treat yourself – whether it’s visiting a spa, having a massage or eating in one of the islands’ best restaurants. If you’re celebrating a special birthday, anniversary or just fancy spoiling yourself (and your partner) then we recommend a sunset champagne cruise. You can sit back, relax, enjoy the romance, spot dolphins and enjoy good food.
